Lufthansa has extended Airbus A380-800 service between Munich and Mumbai deep into the Northern Summer 2026 schedule.
The airline, flagged by aeroroutes.com, has revised its schedule to deploy the A380 between Munich and Mumbai for longer than initially planned.
Lufthansa had previously scheduled the A380-800 on service from 1 July 2026 through 27 September 2026. Still, under the revision, while the date of commencement will remain, the operation to the Indian city will extend through 23 October 2026 instead.
The schedule revision ceases in time for the commencement of the northern winter schedule 2026/27, when many airlines adjust their services, whether in terms of capacity or frequency, to match seasonal demand trends.
LH766 will depart Munich at 1220 and arrive in Mumbai at 2350. The return leg, LH767, departs at 0145 with a 0645 arrival back into Munich. Flight frequency is daily.
A380 Revival: Unexpected But Needed
Lufthansa’s extension of the Airbus A380 service between Munich and Mumbai into late October 2026 is yet another vote of confidence for the world’s largest passenger plane that was once written off across the industry.
During the COVID pandemic, Lufthansa grounded its A380 fleet and permanently retired the jet as part of efforts to streamline costs and become more efficient, as twin-engine jets became the vastly preferred means of transportation.

The revival of the A380 wasn’t expected or guaranteed to this day; its rebirth stems from ongoing widebody shortages that have crippled new deliveries and from surging demand across India, which has prevented it from meeting that demand, hence the need for a jet like the Airbus superjumbo.
Thus, while considered down and out internally, the Airbus A380 is now proving itself a valuable solution for meeting airlines’ capacity requirements across global markets, as the shift towards twin-engine jets has become more apparent.
Capacity Boost For Mumbai & India
Lufthansa currently deploys the Airbus A350-900 on service between Munich and Mumbai as LH766/767. Replacing the A350 with the A380 increases capacity by more than 50%, putting more seats on the market for the German flag carrier and giving passengers more opportunities to use the service.
For the broader part of India, it reflects the importance Lufthansa is placing on this fast-expanding market and the need for sustained widebody services during some of the most critical times of the year.

While the Airbus A350 offers better fuel efficiency, the sheer capacity of the Airbus A380 sees the plane excel in markets such as Mumbai, where it can maximise passengers per flight, even with the A380’s thirstier engines.
The newer A350 certainly proves flexible for thinner routes or even secondary airports. However, the A380’s sheer volume at major international hubs and its ability to secure more premium seats are standouts for the airline when it assesses deployment opportunities each year.
Bottom Line: More Lufthansa Seats For India
Lufthansa’s decision to extend Airbus A380 service between Munich and Mumbai through late October 2026 increases capacity over the typical A350 service.
Additionally, the move underscores the confidence the German flag-carrier has in the Indian market and its importance moving forward, as the A380-800 proves that, despite once being considered down and out, it is integral to high-demand markets.
