History & Founding

Delta Air Lines traces its roots to the world’s first aerial crop-dusting operation, Huff Daland Dusters, Inc., incorporated on 2 March 1925 in Macon, Georgia. C.E. Woolman, the company’s general manager and later its first CEO, led a group of local investors in acquiring the business and reincorporating it as Delta Air Service in December 1928, naming it after the Mississippi Delta region. Passenger operations launched on 17 June 1929 between Dallas and Jackson, Mississippi.

After securing an airmail contract in 1934, Delta began business as Delta Air Lines proper, moving its headquarters from Monroe, Louisiana, to Atlanta in 1941. Decades of growth followed: the airline launched its first international routes in 1953, operated all-jet equipment by 1970, and began trans-Atlantic service to London in 1978. Delta became the first airline to board more than 100 million passengers in a calendar year in 1997.

The carrier filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September 2005, citing rising fuel costs, before emerging in April 2007 after successfully fending off a hostile takeover bid from US Airways. In October 2008, Delta completed its landmark acquisition of Northwest Airlines, absorbing Northwest’s extensive Pacific routes, its Airbus-heavy fleet, and its Minneapolis hub. Full operational integration was completed in January 2010.

In July 2024, Delta suffered its most damaging operational crisis in the modern era when a faulty software update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike crashed millions of Microsoft Windows computers worldwide. While other carriers recovered within hours, Delta’s heavy reliance on the affected systems meant the disruption persisted for 5 days, resulting in the cancellation of more than 7,000 flights and affecting 1.3 million passengers, at an estimated cost of $500 million. The U.S. Department of Transportation opened an investigation into Delta’s customer communications during the outage. Delta subsequently filed suit against CrowdStrike seeking damages.

Fleet

Delta Air Lines operates one of the most diverse commercial fleets in the world, spanning narrowbody and widebody aircraft from both Airbus and Boeing. The Airbus portfolio entered the fleet through the 2008 acquisition of Northwest Airlines and now represents the majority of the fleet.

Delta operates the world’s largest passenger subfleets of the Airbus A220, Boeing 717, Boeing 757, Boeing 767 and Airbus A330. An in-house maintenance division, Delta TechOps, manages the fleet’s complexity and generates additional revenue by servicing aircraft for other carriers. As of early 2026, Delta’s mainline fleet stands at approximately 988 aircraft with an average age of around 15 years.

Route Network

Delta Air Lines operates a hub-and-spoke network structured around nine primary hubs, with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) serving as its largest and busiest — one of the world’s highest-volume connecting hubs. The network spans more than 300 destinations across 52 countries on six continents, with Delta and its regional partners operating over 5,400 daily flights.

Unlike low-cost carriers, Delta’s network is built around deep connectivity at major hubs, enabling single-connection access to hundreds of destinations globally. Its SkyTeam alliance membership extends Delta’s effective reach to over 1,000 destinations worldwide.

The airline has no fatal mainline accidents in the modern jet era, aside from the incidents listed below.

  • Flight 191: L-1011 encountered a microburst on approach to Dallas/Fort Worth; 137 of 163 on board killed, including one motorist on the ground. The crash accelerated industry-wide adoption of onboard windshear detection systems. 2 Aug 1985
  • Flight 1086: MD-88 departed LaGuardia runway during heavy snowfall landing; aircraft came to rest on an embankment beside Flushing Bay. 29 minor injuries, no fatalities. 5 Mar 2015
  • CrowdStrike outage: Faulty cybersecurity software update caused Delta to cancel over 7,000 flights in five days, affecting 1.3 million passengers. DOT investigation opened; Delta estimated $500 million in losses and filed suit against CrowdStrike. Jul 2024
  • Toxic fume events: Surge in auxiliary power unit (APU) fume events caused health issues for passengers and crew; Delta began replacing APUs across the fleet. 2024–25
  • Otherwise: No other fatal mainline accidents in the modern era; a long record of safe operation across billions of passenger miles.

    Financial Results

The airline generates significant income from its premium cabin strategy and its SkyMiles loyalty programme, which alone contributed over $3.8 billion in revenue in 2024. Premium product revenue growth outpaced main cabin growth by six percentage points in Q4 2024.
