Air Mauritius is facing a fresh problem, with its former chief executive officer taking the carrier to court.

A decision reached at the beginning of February 2025 is now coming back to haunt the airline, with Charles Cartier suing for unfair dismissal.

As a result, Cartier is seeking damages of approximately 1.7 million euros following a contract that was expected to run until March 2027, which was not fulfilled.

A termination, which Cartier argues occurred without reason and 25 months before the expiration date, is the cause for concern, and now he believes it was unjustified.

The comments, shared thanks to the lawyer representing the former CEO of Air Mauritius, came at a time when the airline could not afford any further negative press, let alone more financial obligations.

Defimedia confirmed the situation in a report published on July 4, 2025, stating that while the focus is on the pay owed, Cartier is also entitled to bonuses, which range from vacation benefits to travel benefits and severance pay.

Now, Air Mauritius, as pushed by the lawyers representing the former chief executive officer in the legal case, will be required to pay the sum, in fact, as ordered.

Challenges At Air Mauritius

In March 2025, just a matter of weeks after the dismissal of its CEO, Air Mauritius was flooded with headlines following reporting that its position within the industry may not be secure.

Following many changes to the business to mitigate what is described as a lengthy financial crisis stemming from poor decisions, USD 300 million was required to stabilise the company.

For the poor financial position, increasing expenses have been only partly to blame; however, other challenges included decisions across the route network.

The consensus has remained that decisions made by upper management were poorly informed, lacking adequate studies, which led the airline into an unsustainable state.

Those poor decisions resulted in the airline’s entry into voluntary admission to reposition itself for the future, but that doesn’t mean the airline is out of the woods with its former CEO coming out to sue; it’s just the next in a long list of obstacles that require overcoming.
