Malaysia Airlines has seen its profits drop as it faces challenges in its day-to-day business.
The Group reported an annual profit, this representing its second consecutive one; however, the profit margin fell by some 93% year over year.
Malaysia Airlines states that the significant drop in profit was due to capacity cuts and lower airfares, with the capacity cuts being a substantial contributor to the airline’s recent struggles.
While there have been cuts in capacity and concerns over aircraft, it wasn’t all doom and gloom, as Malaysia Airlines stated they were very comfortable with overall demand in a premium setting, alongside high load factors.
These figures give Malaysia Airlines the necessary confidence to move ahead positively in the future if it’s able to navigate some of the challenges present in the operating environment at this stage.
Malaysia Airlines Faces Aircraft Woes
One of the airline’s most recent additions to its fleet is the A330neo, a game-changing widebody designed to enhance efficiency and support the airline’s long-term growth in the market, while also facilitating fleet renewal.
However, after several delays in acquisition efforts, the beginning of the airline’s operational life with this new plane was anything but smooth, with many issues that led to the first unit being grounded.
At the time of the grounding, which occurred in late December 2024, Malaysia Airlines stated that it was highly disappointed with Airbus and Rolls-Royce over the production quality of the first A330neo it had received.

The carrier stated that it would launch an immediate investigation into the proceedings to determine why the quality of the product it had was not of the highest standard.
Following that review, the airline confirmed that all necessary repairs had been implemented after several months, and they were confident in moving ahead, utilising the A330neo to the best of their ability.
However, the impact was clear from the beginning, not just with the delivery delays but also the issues that were encountered the moment the new aircraft type arrived at the Kuala Lumpur-based carrier.
