Uzbekistan Airways will increase its commitment to the Boeing 787 by purchasing additional units to meet demand and continue fleet renewal efforts.
The latest purchase, valued at USD 2 billion, will see the acquisition of 14 more Boeing 787-8s, the smallest variant in the family, to expand its widebody flying network.
As part of the new purchase, Uzbekistan Airways would take the first unit in the latest commitment from 2029, with deliveries to conclude in 2032.
The airline’s chairman confirmed that the details of this deal between Boeing and itself are still being figured out. However, it can all but be confirmed with an MoU initially.
The $400 million worth of international financing was approved in mid-January to boost Uzbekistan, with a 1/4 of that amount destined for the carrier. Additional funding is also in the works for the company.
Fleet data indicates that Uzbekistan Airways has seven of the Boeing 787 Dreamliners to its name; all these units are also for the -8 model, with the fleet averaging 6.7 years.
These Boeing 787s can be seen in markets worldwide ranging from closer to home to even Seoul Incheon as part of network connectivity targets.
By adding more of the type to the fleet, the carrier can farewell ageing types such as the Boeing 767, with four units remaining, averaging 18 years of age, alongside others.
Uzbekistan Airways Also Orders Airbus
While Uzbekistan Airways’ latest announcement that it will purchase more Boeing aircraft has received much attention, this new deal is part of broader streamlining and renewal efforts.
At the beginning of 2023, Uzbekistan Airways confirmed purchases of new Airbus aircraft to elevate its single-aisle fleet.
The deal included 12 aircraft with a modest balance spread across the A320neo and A321neo. It was deemed the next necessary step in the evolution of the passenger fleet.

New aircraft such as the 787-8 and Airbus’ commitments will help substantially modernise the business. They will also give passengers a more comfortable flying experience, elevating customer satisfaction.
Simplicity can lower operating costs, reduce maintenance complications, and reduce crew costs while making schedules easier to curate and adhere to.
