Copa Airlines has become the next major international airline to experience complications when taking delivery of 737 MAX jets.
The Panama-based airline is cutting its overall network amid delays in acquiring 737 MAX jets, which is ultimately a last resort to try to stabilise the business.
The adjustment of the growth plans follows many other airlines forced to do something similar. The U.S.-based United Airlines has said it’ll cut growth in the coming years as it will have fewer available aircraft, driven by Boeing’s delays.
As Boeing’s output levels have plummeted in recent months, driven by strike action and oversight from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the delivery backlog has only gotten more complicated.
The complications mean that Copa Airlines cannot forecast when new aircraft will be delivered and thus activated on the network. As such, changes must be made to ensure the network can continue operating at a reliable level.
According to its latest forecast, Copa will take delivery of 2 737-8 jets from the MAX family before the end of the year. One plane will be delivered at the end of November and the next in December.
Once these units are delivered, the aircraft total will rise to 112. However, 2025 deliveries are expected to be a bit more complicated.
Accounting for the most recent delays, the airline hopes to receive 11 MAX jets over the next calendar year; however, the delivery schedule is subject to change.
Furthermore, much of the airline’s forecasting relies on the assumption that production ramp-ups for Boeing and the MAX series will finally occur in 2025.
The FAA barred increases in production for the MAX across 2024 with the fear that any increases would result in less emphasis placed on the business turnaround and implementation of safety practices.
However, Copa Airlines is being incredibly measured with its forecasting because it knows that if production increases can materialise well, it may be able to exceed its targets. Still, with so much uncertainty, this becomes impossible.
