Boeing’s potential 777-10, a stretched 777X variant pitched to seat upwards of 430 passengers, would be powered by the GE9X engines.
As Dubai-based Emirates has long pushed for the launch of this model as a successor to the Airbus A380, a Dubai Airshow 2025 top-up purchase for the 777X prompted further studies from Boeing over the possible release.
While still conceptual, the release of the aircraft could bridge the gap between current efficient twin-engine aircraft and outgoing, less efficient superjumbos. Will it launch?
Boeing Confirms 777-10 Technical Feasibility
The first reporting on the Boeing 777-10 came years after the initial program launch, as part of studies to fill additional niches and respond to emerging demand for high-capacity jets that were more efficient than the superjumbos on the market at the time.
The planemaker confirmed that it had achieved the technical feasibility neccesary to move forward with a 777-10, as it has been dubbed, a stretch of the 777-9 still equipped with the GE9X, folding wingtips, and other technologies.

That feasibility paved the way for a possible launch; however, in the years following technical feasibility for this model, which positioned itself as a twin-engine A380 alternative, the brakes were seemingly halted and rather sharply.
Two fatal 737 MAX accidents would divert resources away from innovation and force a focus on restoring the most important product in the commercial aeroplanes program, then delays to the 777-9’s launch, a COVID-19 pandemic, and more halted talks over the high-capacity variant.
Emirates Order Sparks 777-10 Study
For over a decade, discussions about the 777-10 were rare, until the Dubai Airshow 2025, when Emirates revived them by ordering 65 Boeing 777-9s in a deal valued at over $30 billion at list price.
The commitment pushed its 777X backlog to nearly 300 aircraft, and as part of the contract, it secured options to convert the aircraft to the larger 777-10, for which Boeing said it has strong backing to launch a new feasibility study.

Emirates Chairman HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed has repeatedly stressed that current offerings in the widebody space are insufficient, with airport capacity constraints and surging traffic growth posing potential headwinds in the 2030s, when airlines are looking to renew their fleets and meet demand.
At the time Boeing confirmed it would proceed with a feasibility study, Emirates said it fully supported the study on the 777-10 and was considering it as a potential replacement for the Airbus A380 from its Dubai hub.
Boeing is now set to prioritise communication with airline customers, its supply chain, and internally to assess the feasibility of the 777-10. With nothing guaranteed, the mere prospect of a study commencing is the first positive sign in a decade regarding the model’s possible release.
Why Airlines Want The New 777X
While Emirates has publicly called for the 777-10, there appears to be additional interest, based on the planemaker’s comments, and the model is perceived as the perfect blend of twin-engine efficiency and high capacity.
A stretch on the 777-9 would position the 777-10 as a 430+ seat model, ideal for mega hubs such as Dubai, where there remains a need for a successor to the A380.

The 777-10 would also bridge the gap between the 777-9 and superjumbos such as the A380, where lower trip costs are already achieved thanks to the GE9X, folding wingtips for existing gates, and reduced fuel burn, but with still lower capacity.
Much of the interest in the model has been spurred by the rapid recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, which outpaced expectations as airlines sought to meet demand.
Emirates says that, into the 2030s, demand will continue to increase from major hubs, airport infrastructure will not be able to keep up, and a larger aircraft model will be required than is currently available.
Will Boeing Launch The 777-10?
Boeing’s 777-10 offers a compelling counter to the Airbus A350-2000, another stretch model under study and a potential way to fill the void left by aircraft such as the Airbus A380.
For the planemaker to move forward with a formal launch, its feasibility study would need to show sufficient demand to justify the investment, with likely more than one customer committing upfront to the purchase, but others required first.

However, feasibility studies have often been conducted on conceptual aircraft and have not progressed to flight for a variety of reasons. But, Emirates’ push is something the business hasn’t been able to ignore for some time.
777-10 Launch Timeline Amid Delays
According to Avolon’s UpNext 2026 report, a possible launch of a 777-10 type program appears too early in 2026 but may be a more realistic option in 2027 and beyond. Entry into service remains uncertain.
At this stage, Boeing continues to contend with the uncertified status of the broader 777X program, with delays exceeding six years relative to the initial entry into service (EIT).

Having already taken an excessive $15 billion charge on the program and certification still some time away, let alone the first scheduled passenger flight, Boeing knows it needs to determine which existing models will move forward with the 777-10.
Bottom Line: A Possible Option
By the mid-2010s, the Boeing 777-10 had demonstrated technical feasibility and was already presented as a potential option for high-capacity, efficient widebody flying.
But with Emirates‘ renewed commitment to the 777X at the Dubai Airshow 2025, and a feasibility study confirming that Boeing is taking this model seriously, it is clear the company is committed to understanding whether the jet would be a good decision.
A launch remains uncertain, but with customer Emirates eagerly awaiting the model and other potential customers interested, it has the opportunity to reshape the broader 777X family into the 2030s.
