Etihad Airways is set to operate all four of its daily flights between Abu Dhabi (AUH) and London Heathrow (LHR) with its Airbus A380 sooner than scheduled.

Flagged by aeroroutes.com in a recent schedule change, the airline will, from 15 December 2026, deploy the world’s largest passenger aircraft across all four daily flights, bringing the date forward by three months.

With sustained demand on the UK route and Heathrow slot constraints, adding frequencies is challenging, so the Airbus A380 offers a workaround, with Emirates using a similar strategy to add thousands of daily seats.

Four Daily Airbus A380 Flights To London Heathrow

The latest schedule update shows that the four daily rotations will commence on 15 December 2026; this has been brought forward from the plan to reach this total from 27 March 2027, the end of the Northern Winter 2026/27 season and the start of the Northern Summer 2027 schedule.

Etihad Airways’ first stage of this planned rollout is set to commence on 25 October 2026, when the EY63/64 service moves from five weekly Boeing 787-9 flights and two weekly Airbus A380 flights to a daily A380 operation.

EY65/66 is next, with the transition from the 787-9 to the A350-1000, but by mid-December it will also transition to the Airbus A380, providing fresh opportunities to deploy the high-capacity Airbus elsewhere.

The schedule changes mean A380 departures will be staggered throughout the day, with departures from Abu Dhabi at 0245, 0810, 1040, and 1410, and departures from Heathrow at 0850, 1355, 1920, and 2055. The A380’s capacity will be spread across the day, while the change also marks a major increase in available seats.

London Heathrow Anchors Etihad Airways’ Airbus A380 Network

London Heathrow will see four daily Airbus A380 flights, indicating the airport’s importance in a post-pandemic environment for the Abu Dhabi-based carrier. The A380’s return is centred on this city and airport.

As COVID-19 restrictions eased, airlines saw demand surge across their networks, after many had previously axed the A380 in favour of more efficient twinjets to reduce costs. The industry adopted that strategy, but few followed through due to complications in renewing widebody fleets.

Unfortunately for Etihad Airways, new aircraft deliveries were delayed and continue to be delayed because the pandemic disrupted supply chains. As a result of surging demand and a lack of available cover, the A380 became financially viable again, and the type was reintroduced to add capacity to the UK and free up other smaller widebodies.

Initially, just a handful of Airbus A380s were earmarked to return, strictly for London Heathrow operations. However, soon after the Airbus A380 returned, Etihad Airways decided to bring back additional aircraft to expand its network and address ongoing widebody delivery delays.

The airline, which had initially grounded all 10 of the superjumbos and penciled in a future without the type, returned it to service. The reversal has given the type a second wind and helped ease capacity pressures for the Abu Dhabi-based airline.

While the aircraft isn’t viewed as a long-term solution, persistent manufacturer and supply chain constraints have limited its ability to secure replacement capacity. Given those limitations, Etihad Airways intends to continue using the aircraft, and London Heathrow is the prime example of its purpose in the mid-to-late 2020s.
