British Airways is continuing to fine-tune its Airbus A380 rotations for the Northern Winter 2026 season, making key changes across several markets.
Recent filings flagged by aeroroutes.com and other schedule providers indicate the airline will look to shift aircraft across key long-haul routes from its London Heathrow hub to manage capacity best.
While the jet will remain a key part of the airline’s widebody operations and a leader, especially for premium capacity, the changes continue to reflect evolving trends and circumstances, as well as the airline’s best efforts to manage its assets.
Johannesburg A380 Changes Confirmed
British Airways’ London Heathrow to Johannesburg service, BA55/54, will be swapped away from the Airbus A380 to smaller aircraft in separate phases over a six-month window, with load optimisation during seasonal leisure dips and a bid to ensure routes remain profitable amid volatility.
The changes, from 6 September 2026 to 24 October 2026, have the service BA55/54 replaced with the Boeing 777-300ER. From 25 October 2026 through 12 December 2026, the 787-9 will then take over the role of the 777-300ER.

The second phase of the changes to South Africa will be seen across the festive season and into 2027, from 13 December 2026 through 28 February 2027, when the 777-300ER will once more take over from the 787-9.
Lastly, from 1 March 2027 through 17 March 2027, under the current schedule, the airline will use the Boeing 787-9 once more; this shift occurs four times over a seven-month window without the Airbus A380.
Los Angeles Next On The List
Next, the airlines’ premium Los Angeles service from 25 October 2026 will see the Airbus A3980 ditched entirely, with the BA269/268 service swapped to the 777-300ER, creating a triple-daily 777 service.
The removal of the Airbus A380 cuts 22% of capacity across the service but favours the premium Club Suites on the 777 jet, a key product for the airline. What this means is that the winter season, for the first time in over a decade, will be without the world’s largest passenger plane, without extreme circumstances such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

That A380 route removal was flagged in early April, as it was the most visible long-haul assignment for the world’s largest passenger plane, but with every change the airline makes, there are additional opportunities.
Singapore Changi Gains The A380
As part of the sweeping changes and the axing of the A380 across the Northern Winter 2026/27 season, the freed-up Airbus A380s mean that from 6 September 2026 through 24 October 2026, the superjumbo will replace the Boeing 777-300ER on service between London Heathrow and Singapore Changi.
This will be further complemented through 25 October 2026 and 17 March 2027, when the 787-9 was scheduled to operate; instead, the A380-800 will take its place, marking a major change in seating between the two crucial international hubs.
The Airbus A380 network for the Northern Winter 2026 schedule will stretch from San Fransico to Miami, and flights to Dubai International will be complemented by Singapore Changi as well.
