British Airways is set to remove the Airbus A380 from its popular London Heathrow to Los Angeles service for the winter 2026/27 schedule.

The change by the flag-carrier ends one of the most visible long-haul assignments with the world’s largest passenger plane, with it having been a familiar sight on this route for years.

Instead, the airline is replacing the double-decker giant with a much smaller-capacity plane, meaning fewer seats will be available during the cold months.

What Changes Are Coming?

Under the revised plan, the Airbus A380 will be axed from daily flying between London Heathrow and Los Angeles, with a shift instead towards the Boeing 777-300ER.

This smaller-capacity aircraft is still a sizeable widebody with strong range and other metrics, but compared to the A380, it represents a significant reduction.

For the United States, the change involves deploying an aircraft that is already a mainstay of the carrier’s transatlantic network and thus doesn’t represent much of a shift from the ordinary.

Ultimately, this means fewer seats per departure and a visible reduction in peak capacity on a premium route across not just leisure but business markets, during the winter season, and a change that removes over a decade’s worth of near-normal operations.

What About British Airways Passengers

For British Airways passengers, daily service will continue, but the switch to a smaller aircraft is not being perceived as a complete downgrade.

These Boeing 777-300ERs are fitted with newer Business Class suites and offer a more premium experience that aligns more closely with competitors’ offerings. Moreover, upgrades are present on other aircraft in its fleet, featuring the Club World layout on some older frames.

However, the trade-off is apparent in the aircraft’s size: with the A380’s scale, there are more seats and the ability to upgrade, but with the superjumbo axed during the colder months, capacity is reduced.

Therefore, with fewer seats available, the focus also rests on bookings, with fewer opportunities for travellers and leaving a knock-on effect during winter, potentially causing a crunch period, especially around the festive season and other important American holidays such as Thanksgiving.
