An Airbus A350-1000, a prospective choice for China Airlines

China Airlines has responded to some concerns about political pressures that may be felt regarding its prospective widebody order.

There had been some feeling that the airline’s targeting of a multi-billion dollar order could see decision-making more impacted by political tensions and backing.

China Airlines has come out, however, and its chairman has stated that this won’t be the case. It remains in a favourable position to evaluate the available aircraft.

The order follows renewal efforts that involved China Airlines purchasing the Boeing 787 Dreamliner with a view of these aircraft to replace its fleet of Airbus A330s.

A Big New Order

China Airlines’ considerable prospective aircraft purchase isn’t a new development; renewal efforts date back to the mid-way stages of 2023.

The carrier is said to be targeting a wide body in the form of the A350 and 777X for long-haul flying, but no decision has yet been made.

China Airlines already flies the A350, with the -900 currently in service and over ten units present. However, with this new order, the older and less fuel-efficient 777-300ERs will remain the focus for replacement.

By flying the A350 already, the company is familiar with this aircraft type. This could lead to Airbus being the favourite to put forward its A350-1000 to ensure commonality then simply, but China Airlines will do its due diligence.

The China Airlines 777 fleet only averages nine years of age, while by no means an old fleet and requiring an immediate replacement by the time deliveries occur of this new purchase renewal efforts will take place.

In 2023, the airline cited the A350-1000, considered to be the optimal high-capacity alternative for long-haul flying, as a possible option. The airline was also considering the 777X, an upcoming long-haul jet by Boeing.

Boeing’s recent announcement that the 777X will be delayed until 2026 could hinder China Airlines’ views on the aircraft.

However, this new aircraft order isn’t considered urgent with regard to deliveries commencing immediately, and thus, patience can be exercised when waiting for this new airliner.
