Emirates has announced formal plans to depart Dubai International by 2034 and transition towards Al Maktoum International Airport.
More commonly referred to as Dubai World Central (DWC), this airport has been an important location for Emirates since opening over a decade ago. The airport focus for Emirates is primarily on freight operations at this stage.
However, as part of unveiling a massive new project, Emirates will see five parallel runways and 400 aircraft gates to create a mega airport. The expectation is that 260 million passengers will move across the five terminals yearly.

Dubai World Central will become the international hub of Dubai with an AED 128 billion expansion and investment into the facilities. Notably the airport will be hugely important for the Dubai South precinct as the city is moved around the airport with millions of people to follow.
Dubai International has long acted as an important hub for the Emirates. However, once it is completed, the redeveloped Dubai World Central will be five times the size.
Emirates says it has watched Dubai’s growth closely in recent times and believes the development of the new airport will be key to the long-term success of the location and airline.
High-quality renderings were unveiled as part of the announcement, which reveals one of the more jaw-dropping airport designs of the modern era.

Slated to be an airport that will serve future generations, artists’ impressions of the airport bring nature inside with significant amounts of greenery. Additionally, the airport will feature high ceilings and large open spaces.
Emirates and relevant parties want to ensure the airport is a leader in the Middle East and the broader world. The high price tag indicates that the ambition is certainly there to create a megastructure in the region, not for the first time.
Growth In The Middle East
Over the next decade, growth within the Middle East is poised to be incredibly competitive. The UAE and Saudi Arabia, among others, want to attract more people for stays and activities rather than stopovers.
As a result, huge investments are being made into entertainment districts, accommodation, and more to boost the economy.
Additionally, Emirates will face significant competition from airlines such as Riyadh Air and existing companies such as Etihad Airways and Qatar. These airlines, among others, will look to dethrone Emirates and take more market share away.
