PRAGUE - January 21, 2024: Wizz Air Airbus A321-271NX REG: 9H-WDF at Vaclav Havel Airport Prague. From Naples to Prague.Wizz Air is a Hungarian ultra low-cost carrier with its head office in Budapest.

Mass changes are underway at Wizz Air, with the airline confirming it’ll delay taking new Airbus aircraft.

Delays will affect 88 Airbus single-aisle aircraft that were ordered and expected from 2030; the airline is now preparing to begin welcoming the type in fiscal 2033.

The delayed delivery follows a year of turbulence which has culminated in the neccesary overhaul of the airline’s business, from deliveries to order changes.

Wizz Air is taking the time to reaffirm its stance that streamlining its operations and future backlog will take place as it shifts away from the Airbus A321XLR, instead favouring the purchase of the base model A321neo.

The agreement to convert some of the aircraft was previously announced. The company now reaffirms its stance on this matter and also highlights that these planes limit the airline’s seat capacity, which, while it may be perceived as a downside, ultimately helps limit costs.

The renewal of the Wizz Air business is also expected to reach its final form by the end of the decade, with a reliance solely on the next-generation A320neo family. This move enhances sustainability and the financial position.

The Troubles At Wizz Air

Wizz Air has battled substantial pressures across recent years, making changes such as the recently announced one to its deliveries hardly surprising.

One of the biggest, at least operational, challenges for Wizz Air in recent years has been the Pratt & Whitney engine crisis affecting its Airbus A320neo fleet.

As of June 30, 2025, the budget carrier confirmed that 41 of its aircraft were temporarily grounded due to engine woes, forcing inspections and maintenance, the window for which, however, was ballooned out tenfold.

A 300-day window for engine turnarounds aligns with what many other airlines experiencing a similar situation have been reporting. This, however, is concerning.

Additionally, Wizz Air believes engine woes with its next-generation A320neo aircraft are set to continue through to the end of the decade. While new aircraft will help mitigate some of the impact, it’s incredibly frustrating.

As a result, the carrier has sought ways to limit the overall impact on its day-to-day operations, but this has proved challenging, as evidenced by groundings and network changes to reflect the engine woes.

To resolve this, patience will be required, but Wizz Air has reassured customers that it’s doing everything in its power to navigate the troubles, with new agreements being signed with Pratt & Whitney.

That new agreement will give the airline access to additional F27 engines, allowing more planes to be accelerated back into service than initially estimated and thus reducing the number of grounded planes.

All this has culminated in, at the beginning of 2025, the sharing of a more negative outlook surrounding the reactivation of aircraft, with delivery rates improving overall, while aircraft on the ground remaining a problem throughout these 12 months and into the next ones.
