The aviation industry has bid farewell to the Vistara brand following the final flight of this Indian airline before its merger.
In consolidation efforts across India, Vistara has merged into Air India as part of a broader reshuffle following Tata Group coming in to save the flag carrier in recent years.
As part of that reshuffle, Vistara, a full-service carrier, was to be closed to move assets to Air India and other relevant parties as part of consolidation efforts.
Streamlining has become paramount for airlines worldwide and is becoming a more common theme. This was an internal consolidation in this case, but prospective airline mergers from airlines without an already established relationship show the direction things are headed.
Tata Group feels that such closure will also enhance the overall business and help aid recovery efforts at Air India, which is one of the biggest priorities.
Vistara was launched some time ago only as a joint venture between Tata Group and Singapore Airlines, but it will now exist through being consolidated into Air India. Thus, Singapore Airlines will retain just a 25.1% stake.
Consolidation doesn’t affect overall performance, according to Air India executives. Customers booked onto Vistara flights will now fly under the Air India name.
Vistara launched in the mid-2010s as part of a bold bid by the Indian government to allow foreign airlines the ability to acquire domestic airlines;. At the same time, the stake would be a majority, and it would be near close enough to assume quite a strong amount of control.
Thanks to Tata Group and then Singapore Airlines, this airline seemed to burst onto the scene and grab important market share in a rapidly growing market.
However, after many failed attempts, Tata Group took over Air India from the government, and the industry continued to evolve alongside the operating climate. Internal discussions began taking shape about what was next for the Group.
While Vistara was an airline that those who had the chance to fly it appreciated, maybe unlike the state, Air India finds itself in consolidation and is seen as the best decision moving forward.
