Boeing looks set to secure yet another massive new commercial aircraft order, this time from the country of Japan.
A prospective deal would include a staggering 100 aircraft; however, exact specifics were not disclosed, nor has the deal been formally finalised.
Therefore, at this stage, the aircraft, airline, delivery schedule and more are yet to be confirmed; all that has been disclosed is the planned order for 100 aircraft.
A new purchase of this scale comes following Japan striking a trade deal with the United States that’ll see tariffs reduced on auto imports. This is a successful result and will help limit additional costs on the country.
With the continued threat of tariffs since the beginning of 2025, coinciding with a change in administration in the United States, countries have been left scrambling to come to the table with the President to secure revised trade agreements.

Failure to secure these trade agreements in time means exports become less competitive. Additionally, it reduces overall market access, leading to economic stagnation and potentially impacting the country’s relations with the United States.
Other Major Boeing Orders
Ultimately, American planemaker Boeing stands as one of the major winners from the trade agreements signed between the United States and, more recently, countries in Asia.
Once agreements are signed, more often than not, as part of these, there are deals for new commercial aircraft included that contribute to the manufacturer’s backlog.
Already, there have been firm discussions surrounding the upcoming confirmation of a contract for the Boeing 777X, which is expected to come from Indonesia and is valued at USD 19 billion, potentially including 50 planes.
Although the makeup of the contract has yet to be disclosed, based on comments from the President and other reporting, the 777X, an upcoming long-haul jet, appears to be a fundamental part of the new contract.

The likely party to take up their offer on the Boeing 777X is Garuda Indonesia, who, even before the signing of this trade deal, had been keen on purchasing new commercial aircraft to expand their fleet to well over 100 units.
Achieving a fleet total of 150 is pivotal to ensuring the international network receives adequate connectivity and enables the enhancement of Garuda Indonesia’s presence across existing and new locations.
Garuda Indonesia does fly the Boeing 777; however, it has yet to confirm its commitment to a direct replacement. Given that the airline also flies the A330neo, analysts argue it lacks a future high-capacity jet in its fleet makeup, and thus, interest in a 777X, even in early July, the 787 being reported makes sense.
Another Boeing Order…
It’s not just Garuda Indonesia, nor now just Japan, which will stand to benefit thanks to recent trade agreements being reached.
At the beginning of July, it was reported that Thai Airways was to be part of a new trade agreement reached, which would see the national carrier purchase as many as 80 new aircraft from the planemaker.
Such a purchase would see details like all others remain scarce; however, more aircraft would only accompany already agreed-upon orders from recent times.

Regarding fleet commonality, the 787 will play a significant role in the long-term future of Thai Airways, making any new prospective purchase of commercial aircraft from that planemaker straightforward, with the possibility of revisiting this family.
After ridding itself of high-capacity jets during the pandemic and undergoing major restructuring in a bid to position itself for a brighter, yet more stable future, the airline has holes in its fleet.
As a result, the airline has a renewed focus on growth. Therefore, there are new requirements for purchase of planes. Boeing hopes to provide them now, thanks to trade deals.
