KLM is giving Chicago a brief taste of its brand new aircraft, the A350-900, in July 2027, with the new Airbus model replacing the Boeing 787.
The schedule filing flagged by aeroroutes.com sees KL611 depart Amsterdam at 1245 and arrive in Chicago at 1415 on 22 July 2027 with the A350-900 operating the flight.
The change means the A350 deployment becomes a rare one-day substitution; it’s not the commencement of regular deployment using the new Airbus jet, at least for the moment. Instead, the Boeing 787 will return for the very next scheduled service.
For Chicago travellers and enthusiasts, the change gives the city a chance to get a glimpse of what KLM has invested in and is betting on as the next generation of its long-haul fleet, and transatlantic services will be a priority as deliveries ramp up.
Chicago O’Hare is one of the most vital gateways from Europe. For KLM, the one-off A350 service is part of a theme seen across nearby cities: the new aircraft will be filtered onto the network, and existing models will either be retired or repositioned to grow frequencies or city pairings.
The Airbus A350 On The KLM Network
While this one-time Chicago service stands out, the broader introduction plan of the A350 has been in the works for months, with the capabilities of the model enabling flying towards Canadian cities of Toronto and Montreal, the first North American presence for the new jet.
Thanks to the flexibility of this Airbus widebody, KLM is looking not just to limit deployment to North America, with a sequence of routes towards Africa planned. While initial frequencies will remain minimal due to the availability of the new jet, with deliveries ramping up in 2027, the cities and frequency rate the A350 will be seen is expected to increase.

The A350 will help replace older and less efficient aircraft on a one-for-one basis, and while some routes will see the A350 take over from the 787-10, this doesn’t mean the Dreamliner is outgoing. Rather, for KLM it’s a strategic decision that allows the 787’s capacity, range and efficiency to now, with the new Airbus jet’s arrival, be repositioned.
KLM’s retirement focus will centre on the A330-200 and A330-300 fleet, with the eventual displacement of the 777-200ER as the network becomes more firm and the A350s make their mark through to the end of the decade.
