Etihad Airways has taken delivery of its newest Airbus A350 as part of continued fleet expansion efforts.
The Abu Dhabi-based carrier confirmed the news in a press release. The newest unit is the sixth of this type to join the fleet.
Following a successful delivery flight from Toulouse, the home of Airbus, the A350-1000 will play an integral role in the future of Etihad Airways’ long-haul network.
In the upcoming months, the carrier will leverage the capabilities of the A350-1000 to begin service to Atlanta, which will become its sixth and newest gateway to the United States.
The new Atlanta service is part of continued expansion efforts, focusing on 16 new routes that will launch this year alone on the network. Further announcements may follow.
A New Era For Etihad Airways
While the newest delivery of the A350-1000 will steal headlines, it is genuinely part of a new era for the company, labelled ‘Journey 2030.’
Over the next five years, Etihad Airways says it will develop a strategy that will be pivotal for its long-term success. The airline intends to grow sustainably.
Etihad Airways says that under Journey 2030, it will extend its global footprint by adding more destinations than ever before and increasing frequency to markets that demand more seats.
The airline hopes to fly to over 125 destinations in the coming years. This growth is to be achieved thanks to the positioning of its hub in Abu Dhabi, which is perfect for reaching many different markets.

Additionally, Etihad Airways wants to double its fleet to over 160 aircraft, including adding planes such as the A350-1000.
Another core focus is Etihad Airways’ plan to attract 10 million point-to-point travellers to the UAE capital by 2030. If the airline can improve the economic benefit of its home, then it feels it’ll have been successful.
Obstacles For Etihad Airways
Despite these ambitious attempts, it doesn’t mean Etihad will sail smoothly through the next five years and achieve all its growth targets.
Etihad also conducted a similar expansion of its business in the early 2010s, making investments in aircraft and airlines that would turn out horribly.
These wrong decisions would plunge the company into billions of losses and force lengthy turnaround efforts, including scaling back the business.

Now, however, after the airline has done its time, the focus is on growth but more sustainably, enabling it to solidify its position as a global leader.
