Emirates is reportedly interested in a possible order for the Airbus A350-2000 if the planemaker moves ahead with a launch of the larger widebody.

The airline’s president, Sir Tim Clark, spoke with Reuters and reaffirmed his stance that aircraft manufacturers need to introduce larger aircraft to combat rising demand and, for their purposes, the eventual retirement of the A380.

Emirates already operates the A350-900, an aircraft it and its customers love, which has received strong feedback since entering service in recent years.

However, the Dubai-based carrier, while often praising the capabilities of the A350-900, has yet to order the larger A350-1000, which is positioned to compete more directly with the Boeing 777X.

Clark says, however, there’s of course an appetite for a larger A350, the A350-2000 as it has been dubbed and is something the airline will actively look into as it begins planning its fleet for the future.

Airbus A350-2000 Overview

The Airbus A350-2000 is a proposed stretched variant of the A350 family that would position itself as the larger member of the family, even above the -1000.

Designed as a high-capacity, long-haul jet, it would further bridge the gap to the 777X while providing a suitable basis for airlines seeking to replace their quad-engined superjumbos with a more efficient aircraft.

With a capacity expected to comfortably exceed 400 passengers, any customer purchasing the plane wouldn’t have a double-deck option. However, it would still have adequate space to configure the aircraft as required.

The A350-2000 has been a feature point across the industry for over a decade as part of efforts to enhance the widebody family; however, for several reasons, it has yet to be formally progressed.

That progression gained momentum in November 2025, spurred by interest from several customers. Airbus said it would proceed with feasibility studies to determine whether the aircraft is a viable candidate for formal launch.

Why Emirates Is Interested In The Aircraft

Emirates’ interest in an A350-2000 stems from a drive to acquire larger, more efficient widebody aircraft to fuel growth from its Dubai hub amid rising demand for long-haul connectivity.

Tim Clark, the airline’s president, has long advocated pursuing larger aircraft, at times expressing interest in the A380neo, even though progress at Airbus has not been made. The interest highlights just how serious the Dubai-based carrier is.

The view is that larger aircraft will be required on high-density routes to better bridge the gap to retiring jets, such as the A380’s and some 777-300ERs.

The airline has already skipped the A350-1000 due to durability concerns in the Gulf’s hot, sandy conditions. However, it recognises that a larger aircraft is still needed to mitigate the impact of the retirement of superjumbos.

Emirates says that, with demand surging, airports cannot keep pace with infrastructure development and therefore require larger aircraft to transport passengers between busy hubs.

What About The Boeing 777-10?

Emirates’ interest in an A350-2000 also comes amid heightened interest in another prospective stretch from competitor Boeing, whose 777-10 has also secured the next stage of feasibility studies in November 2025.

Boeing initiated a feasibility study after Emirates purchased65 additional 777-9s, with options to convert to the larger variant. Boeing said it had the confidence from this deal to launch the 777-10 potentially.

Emirates, which has hundreds of 777-9s already on order, undoubtedly sees the 777-10 as a seamless addition to the fleet to serve high-density trunk routes, while maintaining efficient engines.

As a result, exploring the A350-2000 and the 777-10 are the Dubai-based carrier being smart and conducting due diligence.

Emirates wields significant leverage as a key widebody operator, and for planemakers, the company’s commitment to either program, if launched, would be a significant boost.
