Delta has announced its Q2 results and provided an outlook for the next quarter. It sees record revenues but also some apparent concerns.
Operating revenues for the quarter were USD 16.7 billion, with operating income at USD 2.3 billion. Record revenues are hardly surprising to analysts, who point to the continued record levels of demand.
While travel demand continues to rise and record revenues were reported, Delta has some visible concerns that will impact its forecasting for future quarters.
The U.S. carrier says its second-quarter profit dropped by 29% as it battles higher costs, similar to what many other airlines feel. Whether it be labour-related or the operating climate, airlines have seen their costs jump significantly.
This trend is expected to continue into the third quarter of 2024, with profits lower than initially predicted.
Delta doesn’t believe it’s in a crisis but instead in a position where it needs to slow growth and find ways to mitigate some of its challenges to ensure long-term stability.
Positives across the quarter saw Delta operate the most reliable schedule among its competitors. Service reliability relates to the completion factor and on-time performance for scheduled arrivals and departures.
The quarter saw the airline take delivery of 11 new aircraft, including only Airbus-produced aircraft. The airline continues to transition towards a greater reliance on Airbus for next-gen planes.
These deliveries also resulted in delays that the airline faces in acquiring these new planes as manufacturers battle supply chain difficulties.
The quarter also saw the launch of a new route towards Taipei, focusing on growth in Asia. Additionally, the airline committed to launching more new routes in the following months.
Delta will be the first airline in the United States to report its financial results and performance for the second quarter, and analysts argue it’ll be a sign of things to come.
