The first Comac C909 for Lao Airlines

COMAC has delivered the first C909 to Lao Airlines as part of a continued expansion of its commercial jet offerings.

The delivery also marks the first time a China-made plane destined for commercial flying has entered Lao, a significant step in the right direction.

COMAC says delivery occurred on March 30, 2025, with delegates of the plane maker and Lao Airlines celebrating the momentous occasion for all involved.

This aircraft has 90 seats, and the carrier configured it as an economy jet to maximise the capacity of this new regional type jet. Moreover, the registration has been confirmed as RDPL-34229, one of the more extended commercial aviation industry registers.

The COMAC C909 At Lao Airlines

The C909, produced by COMAC, is aimed at serving regional markets; however, it also strongly focuses on operating short-haul international routes across some markets if deemed feasible.

The aircraft has a range of 2,225 to 3,7000 kilometres. Moreover, a big focus for COMAC has been the optimised nature of its high performance across stronger temperatures, which makes it perfect for specific markets.

However, COMAC expects the C909 to thrive with Lao Airlines, where it can operate across shorter and narrower runways and safely perform takeoffs and landings.

COMAC says the plane can adapt strongly to its environment. However, this is even more important for a company like Lao Airlines, which will be taking on the C909.

New route opportunities can emerge by having a plane they feel is optimised perfectly for Southeast Asia. Lao Airlines joins other operators of the smaller plane, with 162 jets of this type delivered, serving 645 routes across 158 cities.

The C909 achieved its Aircraft Type Acceptance Certificate (ATC) from the Civil Aviation Authority of Laos on March 18. This approval has paved the way for the aircraft to enter service in this country formally.

Why COMAC Has Doubters

Despite the expanding presence of COMAC-produced jets, many are sceptical about whether the planemaker will be a true threat, despite Airbus seeing it as one across certain markets.

Ultimately, the planes produced by COMAC lack certifications from key aviation authorities, such as the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency.

While COMAC says work is being conducted to make this certification a reality, the lack of action from primarily Western markets affects the adoption of this plane.

Moreover, these planes are from what is considered a new plane maker, which remains unproven. Therefore, this company asks airlines to abandon their long-term relationships with Airbus and Boeing, and switch to their product, and it’s a risk.

Switching to these planes hasn’t occurred for many reasons. Moreover, the aircraft doesn’t offer companies groundbreaking performance metrics that rise above existing models, investing the long-term worth the risk.

Furthermore, the limited global maintenance and support network for the C919 has raised questions about the limited operational support for prospective foreign operators.

Other diplomatic reasons have also prevented COMAC from thriving. Despite this, milestones such as those reached with Lao Airlines are important.
