AIRBUS PLANT, BLAGNAC AIRPORT, TOULOUSE, FRANCE - OCTOBER 11, 2017: New passenger aircraft Airbus A330neo is preparing for the first flight. Airplane high speed running along the airport runway.

Many years after introducing the A330neo to the industry, a historic delivery has taken place for the widebody aircraft.

That delivery is the first A330neo to China, registered as B-32MU, with Hainan Airlines accepting the jet.

Delivery of the first aircraft was taken in Toulouse on October 31 2025, the perfect Halloween celebration, with the jet then ferried to Haikou for delivery.

The delivery represents an important milestone for the manufacturer as it seeks to expand the A330neo’s presence in China. In this market, the A330ceo thrived and continues to be utilised by many airline customers.

As for the deal that led to the delivery, there has been much attention in the news, thanks to the transaction structure that allows Hainan Airlines to take on the jet, which is not confirmed.

With undiclosed orders for the A33-900s alongside other identified airframes, with thanks to reporting from scamble.nl, this aircraft model at the very least is going to have a bigger role to play in the Haina Airlines fleet moving forward.

China’s Lengthy A330neo Certification

News of the first delivery comes after a troublesome 2024 for the planemaker, with several delays in securing the all-important approval from Chinese regulators for the widebody type.

With the knowledge that A330ceos are continuing to age, fresh opportunities in the medium term will present themselves for the A330neo to act as the perfect like-for-like replacement.

It isn’t uncommon for Chinese regulators to be tougher on new emerging aircraft, especially in light of recent developments across the industry and at Boeing, but the A330neo is ultimately no new model to the industry and has been flying around the world for some time.

China executed what it deemed its due diligence to ensure that any new product accepted would meet the absolute highest standards possible.

A330neo Enjoys Recent Success

This latest delivery, a landmark one to China, follows a busy period for the Airbus A330neo, during which several sizeable orders were placed over recent years.

Ranging from Virgin Atlantic committing to the aircraft again in 2024 to other noteworthy deals, such as Cathay Pacific’s move to expand its widebody flying, the contracts have broken the drought for this program.

Launched to compete with the Boeing 787, the A330neo was seen as a relatively cost-effective alternative to the popular Boeing widebody at the time.

Thanks to this, from the moment the program launched, its cost-efficient nature meant there was never quite a need for the jet to welcome thousands of orders to break even.

Additionally, Airbus knew that, given the quick turnaround from the A330ceo to the A330neo, orders would not come in thick and fast as airlines studied their prospective fleets and evolved their operations over time.

What followed was a rather bleak period for new purchases, not helped by the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic or industry talk about whether the aircraft had failed to meet the mark set at launch.

Now the jet continues to make a splash, with A330ceo jets beginning to need replacement, and at times, the A350 not being the ideal aircraft for airlines’ operations. That’s where the new engine model steps in, with its more modest nature being a hit.
