Air New Zealand has confirmed it will launch flights between Auckland and Western Sydney International Airport, a new airport for its network, as of 26 October 2026.
Initially, the airline plans to offer service thrice weekly, not just beefing up service across the trans-Tasman, but also adding another new location that the New Zealand flag-carrier will serve, giving Sydney more travel options, especially on the Western side.
What Was Announced
The announcement confirms that Air New Zealand’s Western Sydney schedule is a go, and the route is now on sale, with flights departing on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on Airbus A320neo and A321neo aircraft.
Subject to all relevant approvals, the successful opening of the airport service will depart Auckland on NZ165 at 0605, arriving in Western Sydney at 0750. The return flight NZ166 departs Western Sydney at 0900 and arrives in Auckland at 1415, all times local to their respective cities.

The current plan will see the A320neo operate on two of the three weekly services, with the A321neo operating on just the one flight a week, bringing the total to three.
Aircraft decisions such as these reinforce the importance of the Sydney market, with the high-capacity A321neo featured from the beginning and in time for the Northern Winter 2026 schedule or the Oceania summer season.
A Big Moment For All Parties
This is a significant commemorative milestone for Western Sydney International, as it demonstrates that the airport is well-positioned to continue attracting full-service airlines ahead of the commencement of passenger operations.
The latest airline to commit to flights with Air New Zealand gives travellers in Greater Western Sydney a more direct option to New Zealand, with possible onward connectivity, without having to funnel through Kingsford Smith, helping ease congestion and improve convenience in a rapidly growing part of the city.

For Air New Zealand as well, the latest route announcement is huge; not only does it further deepen what is already a busy schedule to Australia, but it adds a new airport to the route map, at its core, a further entry point, especially into Sydney, enabling the chance to catch fresh business and leisure travellers.
Air New Zealand Customers To Benefit
For customers, the biggest change now, thanks to Air New Zealand, is the choice that’ll be made available. The schedule benefits business and leisure travel, thanks to the optimised days selected for travel, and it also operates from an airport with 24-hour operations.
The modern gateway won’t have the traffic levels of Kingsford Smith and, as a result, with all its new amenities, is expected to have far quicker processing times, a new terminal experience, and a smooth gate-to-gate journey.
Investments in not just the airport infrastructure but the effects this will have on the people who pass through it are key. Reducing stress and increasing comfort can lead those who are more flexible with their journeys to choose the secondary Sydney airport over Kingsford Smith.
The timing also matters because, for Air New Zealand customers, it comes just a matter of weeks after Singapore Airlines reaffirmed its decision to launch daily flights to Western Sydney from its Changi hub starting 23 November, 2026.

Together, the two announcements, along with commitments from Australian airlines, show that this new airport is no longer just nearing completion from a construction standpoint but is becoming real, with airlines committing to offer capacity and firm schedules.
Over time, the role of Western Sydney International, not just within Sydney but across broader Australia, is expected to grow, with more opportunities than ever to ease congestion, open new routes and connections for customers who desperately want them.
