Air India is expanding its route network, featuring the next-generation Airbus A350-900, with the new flagship to be deployed in a key U.S. market.
From November 1, 2024, Air India will send the A350 to New York JFK from Delhi daily as part of plans to enhance its offering to the country.
Furthermore, the carrier outlined plans several months later, on January 2, 2025, for its Airbus A350 to be deployed to Newark Liberty from Delhi.
By early 2025, the U.S. market will see a considerable change in the type of cabins used. Air India says that around 60% of flights will feature upgraded interiors and revised customer-focused service.
The A350 has quickly become Air India’s flagship and provides a glimpse into what Tata Group and its owners hope to roll out fleet-wide.
Tata Group took Air India back under its wing in a purchase from the Indian government that restored faith in the flag carrier once more.
However, the purchase included the understanding that hundreds of billions would need to be invested in the long term to elevate Air India once more.
This flag carrier has faced a troubled period in the industry, with its image in tatters. A dated product and software have left it lightyears behind airlines it hopes to compete with globally.
Furthermore, closer to home, Air India has seen significant growth across India, with new emerging airlines aiming to take market share away from the established carrier.
The A350-900 has 28 business class seats, 24 in premium economy, and 264 in economy. It was only delivered to the airline in the last 12 months.
These planes also sport the revised Air India branding, which aims to give a fresh new feel to a company that has struggled so greatly to be perceived positively.
Air India hopes to be better business-wide, and as more Airbus A350s are delivered, it’ll open up for the deployment of these planes to more markets worldwide.
