One of the most significant aircraft orders ever seen is set to be announced on Friday, 27th of January, from Air India.
An order consisting of wide and narrowbody aircraft has been rumoured since 2022. It now, however, looks set to be confirmed this week.
The purchase will see nearly 500 aircraft ordered, specifically 495, per Reuters. It will consist of 425 narrowbody aircraft from Airbus and Boeing. In addition, 235 Airbus A320neo family aircraft are expected to be confirmed on Friday. Alongside an order for 190 of the Boeing 737 MAX. Variants have not been specified. However, discussions for the MAX have been long reported.
However, Air India will not stop at just narrowbody aircraft. The expectation is they’ll also confirm orders for widebody planes. Three aircraft types will be featured, with the Airbus A350, Boeing 787 and Boeing 777X all included in the deal.
40 Airbus A350s, 20 Boeing 787s and 10 Boeing 777X will soon join Air India’s fleet. Variants for the widebody planes have also yet to be confirmed. However, it’s a vote of confidence, notably for the 777X program, which has endured a drought in passenger orders for some time.

Since the Tata group took over control from the government, they’ve been hard at work looking to rebuild the image of Air India. Included in this has been money going out to rebuild the airline’s fleet with modern fuel-efficient planes.
Per Cirium, Air India has 105 active aircraft with 15 in storage. 28% of their fleet is between 0-6 years of age, while 23% is between 6-12 years. Finally, 47% of their fleet sits between 12-18 years of age.
While some owners may look to reduce spending, it’s been the opposite for Air India, with the cash certainly being splurged.
