Per Reuters, Indigo, a primary Indian-based carrier seeking to expand its business, is close to a significant deal with American aircraft manufacturer Boeing for new aircraft.
The significant contract would be for the Boeing 787, an aircraft type pitted against the Airbus A330neo that has been long-rumoured to be of interest for Indigo’s future international operations.
Indigo recently acquired 777s on a lease, and the addition of Boeing 787s, if agreed to, would substantially help their international flying into the future.
Sources near Reuters say 25 787s could be the specific units behind such a deal. However, nothing has been finalised yet and knowing the industry’s patterns; it could be highly subject to change at a moment’s notice.
Boeing will be pleased to find itself leading the race to provide valuable widebodies and its 787 specifically to a growing Indian carrier looking at capturing more market share and battling with the revamped Air India.
Indigo currently has 292 aircraft in-service, with its most significant fleet type measured by active units, the A320neo, followed by the A321neo.
These will only grow in the future following the 2023 Paris Airshow confirmation of the largest aircraft order in aviation history heading towards Airbus and the A320neo family.
As such, a commitment to the Boeing 787 would see them move away from Airbus officially for their engine-powered flying, aside from leased aircraft such as the two 777-300ERs.
