Airbus has secured a small order and an exclusive long-term customer: Atlantic Airways is buying two A320neo jets.

The airline’s move, though small, supports efforts to replace older-generation A320ceo jets and shift toward an A320neo-only fleet.

Airbus announced the deal on 27 October 2026, helping the Faroe Islands carrier simplify operations and cut costs by moving toward an exclusive A320neo family fleet.

The airline currently flies exclusively with Airbus, with four A320 family jets split evenly between the A320ceo and A320neo; thus, committing to firm A320neos means four A320neos will become the building blocks of future operations.

In announcing the small firm order, Atlantic Airways chairman Niels Mortensen said the ambition has been clear for some time: to operate exclusively on the A320neo platform and consolidate operations around this type, phasing out the A320ceo.

To speed this transition and secure slots as production availability becomes scarce, signings like these are pivotal for a business like Atlantic Airways.

Streamlining to just the A320neo offers broader benefits beyond flying next-generation models, fundamentally lowering operational complexity by removing the A320ceo, reducing maintenance concerns as older types age, and creating greater synergy across the network.

Although the Atlantic Airways purchase is small compared with some other deals over recent years, it’s still important for the airline and for Airbus to lock in a customer for the next-generation fleet, powered exclusively by its equipment.

Building on a familiar operation

Atlantic Airways’ reliance on the A320 family means the transition to an all-A320neo fleet is seamless compared with introducing a new single-aisle aircraft type. The latest order addresses management’s need to replace older models with newer jets.

With 20% lower fuel consumption than the previous-generation model, Airbus positions the A320neo as the optimal solution for airlines seeking to improve single-aisle operations with newer engines, sharklets, and other improvements, the headline selling points.
