Lufthansa will launch a new Boeing 787 service to Columbus in May 2027 as part of efforts to expand its network coverage in the United States.
John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH) will be linked with Frankfurt Airport (FRA) three times a week, giving Central Ohio its first nonstop connection to Europe and putting the Star Alliance partners’ extensive global network within reach.
Supported through the Air Service Restoration Programme led by JobsOhio, the route launch directly targets reducing financial risk for new airlines launching service, with the state organisation and local partners coming together to provide revenue guarantees.
Since 2020, JobsOhio has announced 32 new routes and 15 route expansions across five Ohio airports as the programme’s headline figure, with the view that further connections can be established going forward. Linking Germany has been a top priority, with 38 German-based companies operating locally in Ohio.
As Columbus expands its domestic network through this programme, it still lacked an international service, and a nonstop European service is a major addition, with bookings opening on 20 October 2026 for the nonstop route.
May 2027 is the launch date for Lufthansa to Columbus
Lufthansa will begin Frankfurt-to-Columbus flights on 5 May 2027, according to the Columbus Regional Airport Authority, with flights departing on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays on the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.
Under the schedule, LH406 will depart Frankfurt at 1115 and arrive in Columbus at 1400. Returning to Germany, the flag-carrier-designated LH407 will depart Columbus at 1720 and arrive in Frankfurt, the hub, the following morning at 0615.

Lufthansa shaving LH407’s touchdown in Frankfurt to just after 0600 is vital, not just because it lets business travellers spend the day in the city and get straight to meetings, conferences, pitches, and more, but also because it greatly benefits leisure travellers.
Frankfurt is a vital hub for Lufthansa, and with its Star Alliance presence and onward connections across short- to medium-haul markets, the German flag-carrier now offers Ohio travellers one-stop, improved connections across Europe.
Allegris Boeing 787 to be used
Lufthansa will deploy its Boeing 787-9 on its newly revealed Columbus flight with the all-new Allegris seats. The 287-seater Dreamliner offers 28 lie-flat business class seats, 28 premium economy seats, and 231 economy seats at the back of the cabin.
The German flag carrier’s latest cabin iteration responds to a year of declining customer satisfaction. It aims to offer a configuration comparable to competing airlines, while building long-term brand loyalty.
Lufthansa has invested heavily in its Allegris product. Despite hiccups in its launch due to seat certification issues, the airline is expanding the new cabin’s destination list through additional deliveries and upgrades.
