Etihad Airways is set to cut flights to the United States across its Northern Winter 2026/27 schedule as part of further adjustments to the airline’s international network.

According to its latest schedule filing, published by AeroRoutes, the carrier will reduce capacity at a handful of locations and on some of its typically more popular services.

Etihad Airways’ latest capacity shifts follow previously confirmed changes that’ll take effect in mid-December, when Abu Dhabi to Atlanta flights are reduced from seven weekly to five aboard the Airbus A350-1000.

Additionally, and representing one of the few capacity increases planned, Etihad Airways will boost flying between Abu Dhabi and Charlotte from 16 December, with four weekly flights jumping to 7 and thus daily aboard the 787-9.

Ultimately, Etihad Airways has continued to try and pivot its North American capacity in 2026 in response to economic volatility and higher prices. Seasonal drops in demand in certain cities have also justified the annual network reevaluation.

Chicago cut first by Etihad Airways

Etihad Airways will reduce first Abu Dhabi (AUH) – Chicago O’Hare (ORD) services to seven times a week, equating to a daily flight. While connectivity therefore remains, this is a significant reduction from the typical 14 flights a week or double daily service.

The Abu Dhabi-based carrier will shift to Chicago O’Hare from 25 October 2026 through to 31 January 2027. While this coincides with the busy festive period, it also coincides with typically weaker demand on services to North America for international carriers, who respond accordingly by repositioning aircraft.

The airline’s revised plan is a deeper reduction than previously anticipated. Etihad Airways initially outlined a reduction of just two flights a week, bringing the 14 services down to 12, but this cut will now drop that further to just seven.

Etihad will operate all flights with the Boeing 787-9 during this period. However, after the capacity reduction ends, Etihad Airways will retain the daily flights but instead shift the 787-9 to the larger Airbus A350-1000.

The airline introduced two daily services with the Boeing 787-9 as part of its North America expansion for the 2026 season and, twice daily, launched from 15 June, with both rotations using the 787-9 to improve connectivity between the markets.

New York loses the Airbus A350-1000

Etihad Airways will also shift service to New York John F. Kennedy (JFK), changing aircraft from 15 December, 2026, and removing the Airbus A350-1000 from one daily flight.

Two daily flights will continue to operate, unlike the Chicago-New York JFK route; however, Etihad Airways intends to deploy the Boeing 787-9 as a replacement for the A350-1000, resulting in fewer total seats per week between the cities.

The revision means the A350-1000 departs on one of the two daily services, unlike the previously outlined schedule changes. Still, it ensures frequencies can stay the same even as capacity shifts because of the decision. The change will occur across the EY3/EY4 flight.
