Delta Air Lines is in expansion mode, with the confirmed launch of a new daily nonstop route between Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and Tokyo Narita in late March 2027.

The move is part of a broader expansion of Delta’s Tokyo and Japan connectivity, giving passengers more options to a country that has seen a tourism boom this decade. Narita flights will complement Seattle-to-Tokyo Haneda, giving more choice while returning the airline to the airport for the first time in seven years.

Delta will operate the flight with its Airbus A330-900, part of the A330neo family and a key component of the new-gen widebody mix. The aircraft is suited for serving cities such as Seattle, where demand requires a medium-capacity widebody.

On the A330neo, customers will be able to select the Delta One Suites, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+ and the Main Cabin. This four-class cabin configuration looks to cater to corporate and leisure traffic across the Pacific to Tokyo’s primary international airport.

The Seattle service will begin on 27 March 2027, at the start of the Northern Summer 2027 season; the first Narita departure follows on 28 March. The airline will offer flights daily on the A330-900, with bookings soon to be made available.

Delta Keeps Growing In Tokyo

Delta already serves Tokyo Haneda from Seattle; Haneda’s proximity to central Tokyo makes it particularly convenient for travellers, which is why Delta has doubled down on it. However, Haneda’s location doesn’t negate the importance of Narita.

Narita adds a second Tokyo gateway from Seattle and additional options for travellers connecting across Japan and Asia. Improving connectivity thanks to the delivery of new aircraft is vital to improving customer satisfaction and margins.

Narita, even with Haneda’s growth in long-haul flying, offers a different type of airport experience, with different connectivity options, and now Delta will no longer rely solely on one Tokyo airport from Seattle.

Delta serves Haneda from not just Seattle, but Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis–St. Paul, Los Angeles, and Honolulu. As a result, the Seattle-to-Narita move adds another component to the Tokyo portfolio and also gives the West Coast hub more flights a week and a different angle.

Seattle’s International Network Expands

While Delta has placed importance on its Narita flights launching in March 2027, the recent investment in Seattle has become clear. With over 160 peak-day departures to roughly 62 destinations, the airline has become one of the largest international carriers at the airport.

Seattle is also becoming a more important transpacific gateway as Alaska Airlines develops long-haul operations with Boeing 787s acquired through its Hawaiian Airlines merger. The city has often been less developed as a transpacific gateway.

With this hub optimally located on the West Coast, Delta continues to build on Seattle’s potential as a transpacific gateway, recognising what it can do for connecting passengers from this city and the U.S. to markets such as Japan or deeper into Asia and Oceania.

The Port of Seattle Commissioner Toshiko Hasegawa said the latest commitment from the U.S. airline to Tokyo would help strengthen not just options for travellers but the longstanding trade and cultural links between the two countries and certainly cities.

While transpacific flying remains a focus, Delta’s buildout of services from Seattle has also expanded eastward, with Barcelona and Rome added to the network.
