Air India will reduce its flying to Canada in May, with flights cancelled across Toronto and Vancouver flights from Delhi during the month.

As reflected in a recent schedule update and flagged by reputable aeroroutes.com, the Indian flag-carrier is focusing on service operated by the Boeing 777-300ER for the changes.

Delhi to Vancouver will shift from 7 flighs a week to 5 weekly from 1 May 2026 through 31 May 2026. This service operates as AI185, departing Delhi at 0400 and arriving in Vancouver at 0735. The return leg departing Vancouver at 1015 and arriving in Delhi the following day at 1445, all times local.

Second, Air India will slash capacity to Toronto from 1 May 2026 through 31 May 2026, reducing the 10 weekly flights to 7 weekly (westbound via Vienna). This service departs Delhi at 0005 as AI187, with a 0625 arrival in Vienna, followed by a 0740 departure and a 1100 arrival in Toronto.

The return flight, operating as Ai188, departs Toronto at 1430 and arrives in Delhi at 1530 the following day, all times local to their respective cities, and thus represents changes to what is an important market for the airline.

Impact On Air India Passengers and Network

Fewer seats from the Indian flag-carrier during May put strain on travel between the two countries, where demand has long remained high, forcing rebookings, whether through partners or on the flag-carrier itself, pushing capacity on existing routes and fuelling fare rises during the month.

Amid rising fuel costs spurred by tensions with Iran, network adjustments, whether because of this or otherwise, will become more common, especially as airlines look to mitigate periods of potentially stronger or weaker demand across routes to limit outgoings that are fuel-intensive.

With Tata Group attempting to overhaul Air India and on the back of a record-breaking $2.4 billion loss over the last year, exceeding initial expectations by over $800 million, the business must be careful to avoid further losses in the coming years amid such volatility.

Air India’s Canada Network Overview

Despite confirmed cuts for May, Air India operates a robust network to Canada, serving a large Indian population that has immigrated to the country and supporting business links.

Core routes include service from Delhi, where Toronto is served by the Boeing 777-300ER, and are further complemented by service to Vancouver. Flying further East, the carrier also operates seasonal flights to Montreal, with more options available thanks to codeshares.

Ultimately, Toronto Pearson dominates as the premium gateway, where, at its peak, 10 weekly services are typically offered, and from here, with Star Alliance partner Air Canada, onward connections are possible to other North American cities not served directly by the Indian flag-carriers’ aircraft.
