Emirates has just taken delivery of its first Airbus A350, the first new fleet type to arrive at the Dubai-based carrier since 2008.
Now, the company is providing updates on the future of its other aircraft types that are expected to join the fleet in the coming years.
Emirates broadly considers the A350 the first part of attempts to modernise the fleet, with more planes set to join. The aircraft will complement other next-generation types, such as the 777X and 787.
The A350 marks a move away from the A380 and 777, which have been staples across the fleet for some time. However, thanks to the A350’s capabilities, Emirates will now have an optimal widebody that can reach more regional markets.
Furthermore, the A350 is expected to ease pressures on existing fleet types, which is why the carrier remains excited about the prospects of securing more units and deploying them on the network from the first week of 2025.
However, obtaining the other aircraft types, the 777X and 787, has ultimately been quite the challenge as Emirates is just another airline that has been forced to battle ongoing supply chain issues, which have affected the company’s ability to speed up renewal efforts, among other things.
Emirates Boeing 777X Updates
One of the most highly anticipated aircraft types to join the Emirates fleet in the future is the upcoming Boeing 777X. This long-haul jet will form a fundamental part of the airline’s next-generation high-capacity offerings.
However, the 777X was initially meant to enter service in 2020 and has been an absolute nightmare for many customers, such as Emirates, due to persistent delays.
As 2025, the mid-way point of the decade, is right around the corner the aircraft type remains uncertified. Delays have turned excitement into frustration for many operators eagerly awaiting the series.

Recent delays, however, pushed the expected first delivery back from 2025 to 2026. This means some airlines will see their first 777X operate a scheduled passenger flight in 2027, seven years later than expected.
Sir Tim Clark, the Emirates President, says that the 777X delays, while frustrating, are out of their control. Boeing knows the situation Emirates finds itself in, and the major airline must bide its time while awaiting the plane.
Updates For Boeing 787 Dreamliner
While the 777X and A350 will form a significant part of the airline’s future network, there are also orders for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
The 787 has become an instant classic in the industry with many airlines. Its flexibility is a fundamental part of its success, and the aircraft will eventually be part of the Emirates fleet.

However, unlike the A350, which has been delivered and the 777X, which has long been expected for Emirates, the 787 has more unknowns. Clark stated he has no idea when the Dreamliner will be delivered to them.
In 2025, Clark and the newly appointed Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg will likely hold an important meeting to discuss what’s next and provide greater information on the planemaker’s recovery efforts.
For now, the international carrier will be forced to wait and see how things pan out, exercising a great deal of patience with the view that things will get better one day.
