Heart Aerospace has unveiled its first full-scale demonstrator airplane, part of an ambition to develop a new regional hybrid-electric aircraft.
The company has made headlines for its prospective ES-30, which has attracted significant interest as airlines worldwide look to become more sustainable with their flying and meet emission targets.
The full-scale demonstrator was built almost entirely in Gothenburg, at the home of Heart Aerospace, which has state-of-the-art facilities.
This demonstrator will be crucial to developing the eventual ES-30. This full-scale type will aid the design and production processes.
According to the co-founder and CEO of Heart Aerospace, with less than 25 years to decarbonize aviation, a new method needs to be developed to bring near-zero aerospace technologies to the market faster.
As a result, initiatives such as what the company is looking to do with the ES-30, a 30-seater aircraft for regional use, are aimed at helping propel this forward.
This demonstrator is known as the HX-1, or Heart Experimental 1 (Heart X1) and will ultimately serve as a platform to help fuel understanding and answers to burning questions internally that can then be applied to the eventual type fit for commercial flight.
The HX-1 will initially focus on ground-based testing. These tests will concentrate on charging operations, taxiing, and turnaround procedures.
A fully electric first test flight is scheduled for the second quarter of 2025, and preparations will be over the coming months for hardware tests on and off the plane.
Looking ahead, the Heart X2 is the next focus after this Heart X1, with the pre-production prototype to be based on the ES-30 and will see the design mature by implementing all the relevant lessons learnt in the first edition.
This X2 is scheduled for a hybrid electric first flight in 2026. It will look to build upon early momentum and be pivotal to the overall certification of the final product, the ES-30, by the end of the decade.
While the jury is out on whether Heart Aerospace will survive for the long term and the ES-30 will succeed in the market, the launch of a full-scale demonstrator is an important step in the right direction.
