Southwest, an esteemed airline in the aviation industry and a true staple of the US industry, is about to embark on a new era.
This new era involves several adjustments to Southwest’s operations that will redefine what it means to fly Southwest and its status within the aviation industry.
These changes are ultimately being made with the clear intention of competing and continuing to cater to the evolving needs of its consumer base.
Assigned Seating At Southwest
One of the most significant changes is the introduction of assigned seating, a departure from Southwest’s long-standing open seating model.
This shift will be complemented by introducing premium seating options across all flights in response to evolving customer preferences.
As for the assigned seating, Southwest has listened to customer feedback and conducted thorough research to understand the customers’ desires.
Assigned seating will be the direction for the future. For more than 50 years, Southwest has been known for its open seating model, which has equally its plaudits and critiques but one the U.S. carrier has stuck with.
However, Southwest states that a lot has changed over the last 50 years—shock, horror—but more importantly, what customers expect from travel has also considerably changed.
As a result, Southwest needs to continue to evolve. The airline points directly towards customers now taking longer flights, and in this mode of transport, seating preferences are the preferred means of booking a flight.

Southwest believes this adoption must be translated into its own business to ensure it can remain competitive in several markets.
Southwest has tested how its operational reliability will fair with these changes, and the results have been minimal.
Ultimately, assigned seating is a radical change for an airline that has been hellbent on sticking to what it has known for so long. Southwest states that 80% of its customers, through studies, prefer an assigned seat, and as for prospective ones, this sits at 86%.
There is a pretty colossal gap between what they’re offering now and what they will offer in the future, which has been a driving force for the company to transition to this model.
Premium Seating Is Coming
Premium seating is another avenue many may not have imagined Southwest would look to offer eventually, but one is an endeavour it’s progressing with.
The airline will provide extended legroom in a portion of the cabin to give customers a chance to make their travel experience more comfortable.
Southwest says this is still in the early stages of being rolled out, as internal layout details and core principles are being finalised.
The expectation is that a third of the seats across the currently active Southwest fleet will feature additional legroom.
However, one of the more notable comments from executives concerns competitors. Southwest mentions that this one-third figure aligns with what industry peers offer on their narrowbody aircraft.
Southwest is thus hellbent on closing the gap between itself and fellow competitors across similar markets; these cabin changes are all part of that.
24/7 Operations Coming Soon
Another area of focus is redeye flights. Yes, Southwest is going 24 hours and looking to offer continued nonstop operations. Redeye flights are bookable and will commence on Valentine’s Day in 2025.
For an airline that already operates so many aircraft, some may have expected this to occur within the company, but it didn’t.
This shift is quite a considerable one for Southwest, and for good reason. Southwest believes that phasing in additional flights on a red-eye basis will be very important as part of their multi-year transformation.
The transformation programme the carrier speaks on revolves around plans to improve revenue and implement cost-saving measures wherever possible.
Southwest has an incredible active fleet and a large employee base. However, the company believes these assets could be better utilised.
Therefore, the best way to ensure optimal usage is to safely and strategically deploy these planes and crew as much as possible safely and strategically.
