United Airlines has increased its commitment to the A321neo program thanks to a new purchase.

The deal placed on 10 March 2025 was initially listed as an undisclosed customer. Forty units were selected for the A321neo program.

However, as flagged by Aviation Week, by the time Airbus published its orders and deliveries for April 2025, the undisclosed customer was removed for United Airlines.

A purchase of 40 units further strengthens the airline’s commitment to Airbus’ most important single-aisle series in recent times and helps aid renewal and growth ambitions.

United Airlines will progressively rely more on the A321neo program, with the next-generation efficiency being a true game changer for its fleet and operations. The additional capacity bumps experienced are also very beneficial.

The U.S. carrier already has 37 A321neos in operation, averaging 0.7 years of age; it is, therefore, the youngest fleet type and is showing the airline just what the future will look like as older planes begin to be retired.

In the short term, U.S. carriers and Airbus have expressed concerns about how deliveries will take place without additional costs, given tariffs and other such issues.

To mitigate costs, Airbus and Delta have seen an A350-900 and now an A330neo delivered via Japan, but United Airlines would be hopeful this remains only a short-term concern and smoothes out in due course.

United Airlines Joins A List That Love The A321neo

The A321neo has enjoyed a rapid rise in recent times, with colossal commitments from leading airlines around the world.

As airlines have sought to renew their fleets and have realised that Boeing’s new middle-of-the-market airliner isn’t coming, a compromise is needed.

Airbus pounced on the lack of solid competition in this space and committed to developing the A321neo program further by adding aircraft such as the A321XLR, pushing the boundaries previously laid out for single-aisle jets.

Now, the additional capacity that the A321 platform provides over outgoing previous-gen jets is beneficial, and airlines are purchasing them in large numbers.

Across recent years, the A321neo program has consistently been the best performing, and United Airlines’ latest purchase for the aircraft highlights its belief that this single-aisle jet is going to be a game changer for them as the decades continue.
