A Qatar Airways Airbus A321neo

A week after confirming an order for 210 Boeing aircraft, Qatar Airways could be back for more, this time turning its attention to Airbus.

Fresh comments from the airline’s Chief Executive Officer, Badr Al-Meer, and Bloomberg TV confirmed that there is another chance for a big order from Airbus, which will depend on how the market evolves.

Airbus is already a massive provider of aircraft to Qatar Airways; however, the latest deal for 210 planes, which included only Boeing jets from the 777X and 787 series, meant the European planemaker missed out on securing new commitments.

As a result, the odds of Qatar Airways growing its commitment to Airbus for widebody aircraft seem unlikely, especially considering its purchase of Boeing widebody jets.

While it may appear that Airbus doesn’t have a real way of securing a purchase of jets from Qatar Airways, the Doha-based carrier does not feel this way; instead, it is pointing towards renewing its single-aisle fleet.

With aircraft rising, such as the A321neo program and derivatives like the A321XLR, this family has quickly become a favourable choice for airlines seeking to evolve their single-aisle operation.

The Massive Boeing Order From Qatar Airways

Only a week ago, the Doha-based carrier confirmed a purchase of up to 210 new Boeing aircraft, representing its largest order ever and a record for Boeing from a widebody standpoint.

Qatar Airways confirmed it would purchase 130 of the 787 Dreamliners as part of the newest agreement. Meanwhile, it also increased its reliance on the 777 9, part of the 777X family, with 30 more units being ordered.

While these aircraft are part of a firm arrangement with the American planemaker, it’s also adding options for 50 more of these aircraft should it wish to activate these later.

Qatar Airways is investing now in the future of its business, and that will see a massive focus on having enough aircraft come the 2030s and beyond. The company expects demand to only increase, and ensuring it has the right amount of aircraft to cope with this is huge.
