Nigeria Air, which was meant to be an up-and-coming Nigerian airline, has now been suspended indefinitely by the federal government.

Confirmation of suspension but now indefinitely comes following concerns around the ownership and intentions of the airline.

Notably, there were concerns over how Nigerian the airline claimed to be. While the airline name suggested it was Nigeria Air, thanks to the involvement of Ethiopian Airlines many believed this major company was attempting to steal market share.

When establishing a new airline in the market, any airline launch is targeted but be wholly Nigerian. As a result, any airline launched must solely benefit Nigeria and not be launched to profit another country.

The Federal Government believes there’s no reason to unsuspend the prospective airline if it will not truly benefit Nigeria and its people. As a result, the project that made headlines across 2023 will remain grounded with no visible launch date.

Moreover, earlier reports in 2024 suggest that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of Nigeria (EFCC) is conducting ongoing investigations into the project. This investigation aims to understand the company, the opposition, and the intentions to determine better whether Nigerians will be impacted.

What Is Nigeria Air?

Nigeria Air, or Air Nigeria, was announced in 2018 edition of the Farnborough Airshow.

The prospective company hoped to make a splash on the Nigerian scene by using Boeing 737 jets. However, it was far from smooth sailing, as there were immediate difficulties in obtaining a crucial Air Operator’s Certification (AOC).

Delays would mount because airlines would be unable to start operations following significant pushback from the Federal Government of Nigeria, and thus, airlines would already be present in the market.

Generally, the airline’s launch has been barred by the persistent concerns surrounding Ethiopian Airlines’ involvement and its profiting from Nigeria.
