In a miracle, there is one survivor of the 242 people who were aboard AI171, which crashed shortly after departure from Ahmedabad.
Unfortunately, the fatalities also extend to those who were located in the BJ Medical College hostel, the vice president of the All India Medical Association confirming people had lost their lives.
The sole survivor was a British national of Indian origin and is considered a miracle given the 241 other crew and passengers who did not make it, given the severity of the incident.
Speaking to The Hindustan Times, the passenger, identified as Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, stated that a loud noise was heard after the plane departed, and then it crashed, adding, “It all happened so quickly.”
Additionally, police said that the only known survivor was sitting near an emergency exit of the jet, which was bound for London, and as a result was able to leap from the plane.
Various diplomats have visited the hospital where the sole survivor is located and are in touch with the relevant family members who have been affected by the horrific events that occurred on 12 June, 2025.
What Does Boeing Say?
In a written statement, Boeing CEO and President Kelly Ortbeg extended his deepest condolences to the loved ones of the passengers and crew aboard Air India Flight 171, as well as to all those affected.
“I have spoken with Air India Chairman N Chandrasekaran to offer our full support, and a Boeing team stands ready to support the investigation led by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau.”

“Boeing will defer to India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) to provide information about Air India Flight 171, in adherence with the United Nations International Civil Aviation Organization protocol known as Annex 13.”
This incident involving the Boeing 787 represents the first fatal accident for this series in over a decade and is renowned for its state-of-the-art design and efficiency.
Meanwhile, Sean Duffy, the US Transportation Secretary, stated that as of now, he has no indication that suggests there are safety issues with the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.
With no preliminary information and teams still being deployed to India, it’ll take time to get to the bottom of what took place, as footage is not enough.
What We Know About The Air India Crash
The Boeing 787-8 was operating a routine flight from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick; however, shortly after departure, the aircraft appeared to struggle to gain altitude and subsequently crashed.
The first flight of the Boeing 787-8 took place on December 14, 2013, with delivery to Air India on January 28, 2014. At the time of the incident, this aircraft was 11.5 years old.
Available flight data shows the specific aircraft involved was VT-ANB, a 787-8 with a serial number of 36279. This particular aircraft had completed more than 41,000 hours of flight time and almost 8,000 takeoffs and landings.

Additionally, there were 700 cycles in the past 12 months, which is the average for this aircraft build, considering when the jet was first delivered to the Indian flag carrier.
According to local media, the crash site was the hostel of BJ Medical College, located in a residential area, and the incident occurred during lunchtime.
Imagery shows several parts of the 787’s body scattered in different areas of the building, highlighting the ferocity of the incident at hand.
Speculation On The Cause Begins
As with all significant incidents, especially with video accompanying the incident, speculation ensues; however, with investigation teams only just reaching the site and bodies being pulled, it remains too early to find a definitive cause.
Several industry analysts have weighed in with their opinions, where, if sticking to the facts, it becomes apparent that the videos show the aircraft completing a regular takeoff roll; however, its climbout appears to be affected.

The Air India jet, which was supposed to continue climbing and retract its gear as it departed for London Gatwick, did not do so.
Shortly after departing the airport, the jet levelled out and immediately began to descend slowly, then crashed—these comments from the CEO of airsafe.com, Todd Curtis.
