Lufthansa Cargo has announced it’ll extend its freighter network to Munich, with operations to begin from the group’s Southern German hub.

The freight company will utilise an Airbus A321F to serve Istanbul Airport twice weekly from Munich commencing 6 July 2024.

Lufthansa Cargo says the flight will operate as LH8350 / LH8351 and LH8346 / LH8347, with service jetting off every Saturday and Sunday.

The operator is allowing customers to book their shipments on the new route immediately, should they wish to do so for convenience.

Lufthansa Cargo highlights that Munich Airport offers ideal conditions for expanding its freight service. Furthermore, fast and reliable air freight transportation is required, and the company believes it’s well-positioned to provide this.

Following above-average growth rates in 2024, Munich Airport has been showing itself as an important location as a cargo hub. Now, Lufthansa Cargo is committed to attending to that with its hub in Munich, which has a total area of 38,000 m².

While service to Istanbul is being paraded, it’s not the only route in the pipeline for eventual commencement. The company believes Istanbul is just the beginning and will be the launch of its cargo operations out of the city.

Once service commences, it will lay the foundations for further expansion as Lufthansa Cargo assesses which markets require freight connectivity more than others.

With several aircraft acquisitions and route expansions, Lufthansa Cargo has recently been committed to increasing its presence across Europe and other markets. The freight provider believes that despite plateauing demand for e-commerce, it’s still hugely important to its business and will be able to build a foundation to ensure long-term success.
