KLM Boeing 787s have been grounded recently. Maintenance concerns emerged after work was conducted on the airline’s long-haul fleet.
Cancellations were required due to improper maintenance procedures surrounding a refilling component, which impacted the airline’s long-haul network.
24-hour delays were felt across international flights to many key markets, including those in the United States and as far south as Mexico. The significance of the delays also varied in nature.
KLM flies a fleet of 24 Boeing 787s, which are spread almost evenly between the 787-9 and the capacity 787-10, with 11 units for the -10 and 13 for the -9. Current fleet data shows that one aircraft is parked, but this data is from May 3, 2025.
The Dutch carrier confirmed that seven aircraft were affected by the maintenance. It said that, alongside other reviews that had been done it was attempting to determine what occurred and limit this from happening again.

The temporary grounding seemed to have been caused by technicians who mistakenly proceeded with crucial maintenance procedures for the Boeing 777 aircraft rather than the Boeing 787. While the parts are similar, they are not meant to be interchanged.
In comments shared with ANP, KLM expressed that despite the necessary grounding requirements, there was no major safety risk, but the jets’ parking allowed the adjustments to be made.
