Thanks to a new lease arrangement with Norse Atlantic Airways, IndiGo is increasing its commitment to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

The latest contract means that the low-cost company based in India is increasing its reliance on the Dreamliner, which has six aircraft.

The arrangement includes two additional 787-9 jets, which will come from an all-787 operator, Norse Atlantic Airways, which has been attempting to find ways to increase revenue.

IndiGo sensed an opportunity to enhance its international flying in the short term, and the newest agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways will determine how this will take shape.

While the deal remains subject to regulatory approval, the airline confirmed the initial term of the lease is six months, which can be extended up to 18 months should both parties consider this the best decision.

The two additional aircraft are expected to start up operations with IndiGo by the early stages of 2026 and therefore complement their previous arrangements that have taken place with Norse Atlantic Airways for now six units.

IndiGo knows that its home country of India is seeing rapid advancements in demand for regular and reliable connectivity, and no single carrier will be capable of meeting this demand.

As a result, there is a fantastic opportunity to secure crucial market share across specific locations in the short term and build upon it in the future.

While Air India continues to rebuild and invest tens of billions in new aircraft and the revamp of its fleet for IndiGo, there remains a belief that they can scale their operations internationally and capture market share the flag carrier has lost because of its turbulent past.

A Bright Future For IndiGo

The latest lease agreement, reached with Norse Atlantic Airways, only represents a short-term solution to a much brighter future for the Indian carrier.

IndiGo has already committed to purchasing the Airbus A350. Once delivered, this state-of-the-art aircraft will enable IndiGo to take the next step in its international operations.

Ultimately, the acquisition of the 787 Dreamliner, therefore, on a damp lease agreement with Norse, is a step in the right direction to establishing their international operations in some of their most targeted markets.

IndiGo remains on a journey, hoping to have many international flights present across its network by the turn of the decade and, until that point, only continuing to increase its presence.

Increasing competition from India and neighbouring locations, all trying to capture the demand, has become a key catalyst for Indigo’s sense of urgency to expand and make the most of the opportunity it has now.
