Emirates’ first Airbus A350-900 has completed its maiden flight, and the testing process to prepare for eventual delivery has begun.
The Dubai-based carrier is set to take on the A350, a game-changing widebody designed to alleviate pressure on existing aircraft.
Furthermore, Emirates is expected to leverage the aircraft’s capabilities to reach smaller, inaccessible markets with types such as the A380.
Emirates believes the first unit will arrive in October. However, several delays in acquisition efforts have followed as Airbus battles supply chain issues and more.
Once the first delivery occurs, it will pave the way for other A350 deliveries. The airline expects ten units to be operational by the end of March 2025.
Locations such as Colombo, Lyon, Mumbai, Muscat, and several others have been outlined as those slated to receive the A350, with staggered deployment dates based on deliveries.
Due to all the relevant aircraft delays being witnessed, Emirates cannot guarantee that the ten initial units will arrive on time as intended.
These first ten units will arrive in a three-class cabin configuration, which Emirates states is optimal for short—to medium-haul flying.
However, the fate of the remaining units remains to be seen, as the airline has a solid commitment to the A350 series.
A Recent Top-Up Order
Emirates’ commitment to the series was enhanced at the end of 2023 when the carrier announced another substantial order for the widebody aircraft.
This announcement was revealed at the Dubai Airshow, where 15 additional A350-900s were ordered with a list price value indicating the contract was worth some USD 6 billion.
Thanks to this purchase, Emirates’ total commitment reached some 65 units; thus, the type will play a pivotal role in the company’s long-term future.
The A350 is part of a fundamentally new era for the airline, which will see it move away from primarily utilising the 777 and A380.
These aircraft, while fantastic, have arguably limited Emirates’ ability to serve certain markets, and they’re excited for that to change.
