Finnair has reported its traffic figures for June, which have seen an increase in passengers carried; however, another important area of the business has declined.

In June, Finnair transported just over one million passengers, 1,090,600, which represented a 9.4% jump year over year.

Despite the increase in passengers carried, the airline saw a passenger load factor decline from 0.7% to 80%. Finnair says that the reporting comes as they’ve continued to face disruptions because of airspace closures but have been navigating these challenges as best as possible.

Passenger load factors were highest on services towards Asia and North America markets, and PLFs stood at 80% for Europe. Finnair notes that Middle Eastern traffic sat at 74.1%, with the lowest PLFs being for domestic traffic.

Despite airspace closures, the company saw a rise in ASKs for Asian traffic by 6.1% as it added capacity, most notably to Japan. Destinations in Asia have enjoyed significant recovery over the last 18 months as more airlines have scaled up their flights in response to easing restrictions and growing confidence in travel.

There were also considerable jumps year over year in North America, as Finnair says it focuses on deploying services to Dallas and Chicago. Across the summer months, flying to locations in the United States is expected to be an important part of the airline’s results.

Narrowbody operations were another focal point throughout the last year, with the airline increasing services to European markets. As a result of this increase, the airline saw ASKs rise 12.3%.

Cargo tonnes increased by 6.9%, and the company said this was encouraging across its network. These figures also resulted in revenue cargo tonnage kilometres increasing by 6.6%.

As the airline moves deeper into the summer schedule, more will watch closely to see how traffic performance grows or declines year over year in certain markets.
