An Emirates SkyCargo Boeing 777 Freighter

Emirates SkyCargo has announced that it is modernising its fleet and growing it further by adding more Boeing 777 Freighters.

The latest agreement is set to include five additional units and now brings the order book for the popular widebody to 245, including freighters and passenger aircraft across the 777 family.

Emirates SkyCargo says the investment will boost its main deck cargo capacity by 30% by 2026. Furthermore, the freight fleet will grow to 17 units, including 777Fs, 777 converted freighters, and 747Fs.

The company says demand for services across the SkyCargo division is growing rapidly. Moreover, the Dubai Economic Agenda has prioritised foreign trade growth, increasing the need for the freight division.

An additional purchase of the Boeing 777 Freighter is an important commitment to address short-term capacity needs. This aircraft has proven incredibly reliable for operators worldwide, including Emirates SkyCargo, and is thus considered a low-risk option.

While the Boeing 777 Freighter’s successor, the 777-8F, is available for purchase, it hasn’t been built or is any closer to certification. As a result, while some companies invest in the 777-8F for the future, it remains solely for the future.

If freight operators like Emirates SkyCargo want to address shorter to medium-term demand, the original 777F is considered the perfect middle ground.

The 777F can fly 9,200 kilometres (4,970 nautical miles) and carry freight at levels not seen with any other twin-engine cargo jet. These capabilities give Emirates SkyCargo a lot of flexibility regarding the type of cargo it can carry and the choice of where to send these planes.
