Cebu Pacific is keen on developing a prospective new narrowbody aircraft by Brazilian planemaker Embraer.

Speaking with Aviation Week, the airline’s CEO stated that the more aircraft produced in the narrowbody sector, the better, as aircraft availability is currently a problem.

Airbus and Boeing largely lead the single-aisle sector with their A320neo and 737 MAX models, even down to the A220.

These aircraft are all popular in their own right; however, they have substantial backlogs that these plane makers have struggled to work through in recent years.

Therefore, airlines have been somewhat willing to seek other alternative options. COMAC is moving ahead with its own alternatives; however, these remain unproven and uncertified.

Embraer has been responsible for filling the need for single-aisle, more regional aircraft. However, recent reporting has suggested that a new narrowbody aircraft could come despite Embraer shutting down talk.

Cebu Pacific notes that its current geographical positioning makes purchasing aircraft very difficult. Considering their size, a regional jet from Embraer would not work.

What Is Embraer’s New Aircraft?

Embraer specialises in its regional commercial aircraft. While the planemaker also has many other endeavours, none come quite as close to the commercial industry.

However, at the end of the 2024 calendar year, significant speculation emerged across the industry that a new commercial airliner from Embraer, likely to be scaled up from its E2 series, could be possible.

Cebu Pacific says that if this plane, which would hypothetically launch in the 2030s, were to launch, it would be an opportunity to pounce.

Moreover, it likely wouldn’t be just Cebu Pacific that expresses interest in this new type of aircraft touted as a possible disruptor in the 2030s as airlines look to alleviate pressures on established plane makers Airbus and Boeing.

Embraer told CNBC in late 2024 that it was studying the prospect of new technologies that, if proven, would allow it to launch an all-new commercial airliner.

The Brazilian planemaker felt that if it progressed with adopting these technologies, it would finally be able to compete on a larger scale with Airbus and Boeing.

From supply chains to reliability constraints, Embraer has always been a presence in the industry across recent times but has arguably seen its importance increase and customer reception grow.

There is a strong appetite for developing a new commercial airliner to help rival Airbus and Boeing finally.

However, no formal decision has been made. The CEO has told the public, analysts, and others to temper their expectations as work continues.
