A Cathay Pacific Airbus A330neo

After much deliberation in selecting a new widebody aircraft from Airbus, Cathay Pacific has confirmed plans to boost its fleet.

The Hong Kong-based airline will purchase 30 A330neos, specifically the A330-900, to bolster future flying and has also signed for 30 additional purchase rights.

The prospect of being able to add aircraft if needed after the delivery of the first batch of 30 units will be hugely important for the company as it asses demand and whether it requires additional capacity.

Cathay Pacific says the A330neo was the most optimal choice for future flying. Deliveries are expected to commence in 2028 and be progressively delivered.

Once delivered, Cathay Pacific expects these Airbus A330neos to serve on its more regional services, which is different from how it has used the A330ceo in recent decades.

Cathay says that the planes will principally serve markets in Asia. While this can be subject to change or adjust with future deliveries, the primary focus is on utilising the plane’s next-gen capabilities to help aid demand within Asia.

The commitment to the A330neo also becomes one of the many already existing, with the plan to take delivery of more than 100 next-gen aircraft. Further to this plan, nearly 100 purchase rights to boost the fleet, if required, are also included.

These ambitious targets ultimately represent a significant shift from the situation the Hong Kong-based airline has been in since 2020, when a global pandemic decimated the business.

The company can chart a course for growth once more as part of recovery and repaying recent recapitalisation efforts. Those plans mean it can reach new and emerging markets, order new aircraft, and progress more positively for the first time.

A new commitment to the A330neo is huge for Airbus. The aircraft programme enjoyed a highly successful 2024, with several new and large orders, such as this one, adding to the backlog.

While Airbus’ competitor, Boeing’s 787, has typically been the preferred aircraft for widebody missions worldwide, the A330neo has lately been able to cement itself as a proven alternative for customers such as Cathay Pacific.

  1. My comment is – Expected, no surprise at all, because in cost saving part, A330neo is the suitable replacement with the current A330ceo in CX fleet, specifically pilot training….
