As Dave Calhoun, Boeing’s outgoing CEO, faced a US Senate hearing that saw him grilled following quality issues, a whistleblower spoke out further about alleged quality concerns.
Sam Mohawk, a current Boeing employee, has alleged safety concerns are once more plaguing the plane maker.
The whistleblower alleges that Boeing is improperly documenting, tracking, and storing damaged or out-of-date parts. In a statement, he added that Boeing would likely install these parts on its commercial aircraft.
When parts are deemed nonconforming and thus shouldn’t be installed on aircraft, they are given a red tag or paint to indicate that. In theory, these parts will then move to the MRSA, the Material Review Segergration Area, as per the same document.
However, the whistleblower argued and alleged that he witnessed a disregard for the documentation and accountability and feared that non-conforming parts were installed on 737 jets, thus leading to a potentially catastrophic event.
This systematic disregard for upholding the previously laid-out standards meant Mowhark alleges that improperly stored parts were intentionally hidden from the FAA during an on-site inspection in the Renton facility.
Furthermore, in a statement issued by the subcommittee, Mohawk alleged that his supervisors informed him to conceal evidence from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Much discussion has been held on the relationship between Boeing and key regulators of the FAA over the last decade. Analysts and onlookers argue that the strong relationship had led to leniency in the certification process and a lack of intent from the FAA to follow up.
Unfortunately, the FAA’s seeming trust in Boeing has come undone in the last half-decade. Following a door blowout incident and loose bolts on more aircraft identified at the beginning of 2024, the FAA increased its oversight.
Boeing has remained clear throughout 2024 that it’s open and wants employees to speak out about concerns about production practices and more. The planemaker believes a more open dialogue will encourage better work and help weed out any difficulties.
While the implementation of this approach is seeing an increase in employees speaking out and will hopefully change the culture moving ahead, it doesn’t magically undo the last decade of alleged improper production standards.
The manufacturer was ultimately grilled because of those improper production standards. Its culture came under fire the most, with a Senator and Chair of the Senate Permanent Committee of Investigations saying it was a culture that had prioritised profits and, as a result, saw a disregard for the fundamentals of building planes and its workforce.
Moreover, it was highlighted that Boeing’s culture had silenced its employee base and looked to retaliate against anyone who spoke up, with blamed pushdowns from executives to those on the floor. Several sources inside Boeing have confirmed unrealistic expectations for production across the 2010s based on resources, which led to low morale and a lack of trust.
Boeing Apologies During Hearing
During the hearing that made headlines worldwide, Dave Calhoun faced questions about Boeing’s culture, his pay, and much more.
At the hearing, Calhoun addressed Boeing’s steps to transform its culture, stating he is proud of the progress made and actions implemented.
However, much of the focus was surrounding the compensation that exceeds USD 30 million as he departs the company who are looking for a successor.
Calhoun also took the opportunity to apologise to the victims of several public crashes involving the 737 MAX that were deemed to be Boeing’s fault. Calhoun said that as long as he was employed, he would be committed to doing everything he could to instil a safety culture.
Unfortunately, these words are meaningless for many, given the persistent times Boeing has been found to continue cutting corners despite claims it would do better.
