Australian airline Rex is in disarray as news breaks surrounding concerns for the current board following shareholder developments.
Lim Ki Hai, a businessman from Singapore, most recently handed over operations at Rex to Neville Howell, the new Chief Operating Officer, in June.
However, now the entire board is at risk as the largest shareholders look to remove the chairman and other leading executives from the regional but growing Australian company.
Investors were informed that Lim looked to remove not only the airline’s new chairman but also Lee Thian Soo, who, over two decades ago, was a business partner and helped become a shareholder of Rex.
Rex has developed considerably in the last four years, during the pandemic, when its focus shifted from strictly regional operations to jet-powered operations.
As part of the strategy shift, Rex went from serving regional bases with turboprop aircraft to acquiring Boeing 737s already flying in Australia and launching service between major cities such as Melbourne and Sydney.
The launch of these services saw it push to take market share away from Qantas Group, including mainline Qantas and low-cost Jetstar alongside Virgin Australia.
However, for Rex, while calls for the board to be overthrown are groundbreaking, it would appear to be the tipping point of already existing internal difficulties on a board level.
Several roles have changed, and there have been increased concerns over communication, transparency, and shareholders’ intentions regarding the state of Rex.
The Australian aviation sector has been incredibly complex across the last 18 months, with the emergence of Bonza and its subsequent collapse. Furthermore, Virgin Australia has returned from administration and is now in talks with Qatar Airways regarding a prospective stake.
Over at Qantas Group, they’re equally facing their own battles after years of poor decision-making resulted in customers losing trust. Furthermore, the carrier is also facing increased levels of competition from other airlines across key markets.
