Bloomberg reports that the Airbus A330neo could be closing in on a much-needed order from several Chinese airlines.
The European aircraft manufacturer is reportedly in close contact with Chinese companies regarding a sale of more than 100 units of the midsized widebody.
As a result, the purchase would be a much-needed commitment for a program that has seen relatively slow progression regarding order tally.
Airbus launched the A330neo to upgrade the existing A330ceo, which had been incredibly popular. The A330neo was also considered an alternative for customers seeking a wide body over the 787, and it was extremely successful.
However, following the launch, the A330neo has experienced relatively slow growth and interest levels as customers have either sought the 787 or larger A350. In some cases, companies that may have studied the A330neo ended up moving towards the smaller A321neo family, utilising their extended capabilities.
The Chinese market is expected to be incredibly lucrative, and Airbus is doing everything it can to provide airlines with the necessary aircraft. Airbus knows it faces competition from Boeing and emerging COMAC, and it is hoping to take on the two leading manufacturers.
Specifics around the deal have not been disclosed, nor has a timeframe for an order, but the pair remains confident a deal will be reached. This would significantly improve the A330neos backlog and enable long-term production of the aircraft type.
At the moment, Boeing’s presence in China has sparked question marks as airlines and the regulator remain hesitant to commit to the manufacturer. Boeing has faced continued problems with the quality of its aircraft, which has led to financial implications for airline customers and struggles with maintaining their schedules.
Ultimately, Airbus and even the emerging COMAC are looking to pounce on Boeing’s misfortune by agreeing on many new aircraft orders to ensure deliveries can continue for their planes well into the 2030s.
