AirAsia will grow its fleet considerably in 2025 and expand its route network to respond to demand.

The major airline group facing persistent competition in regions it calls home wants to focus on meeting new destinations on a domestic and international basis.

To support these growth ambitions, the airline is looking to increase its fleet size by five units, specifically for the AirAsia Indonesia division, bringing the total number of aircraft upwards to 30.

The 30 units, once active, will enable new routes to be launched and frequency increases to markets deemed in-demand. As a result, the carrier will be responding to competition and demand.

As for the routes that’ll be of focus for the airline moving forward have yet to be finalised. Airline executives state they are finalising a successful seasonal travel period over Christmas and New Year’s.

This period is important for the airline as it looks to meet demand, enjoy positive financial results, and help carry it through to the early stages of the 2025 calendar year.

While new aircraft will be expected to join the fleet moving forward, AirAsia is also placing great importance on re-activating planes that are currently under maintenance.

Aircraft maintenance is necessary but can easily be a complicated matter with run times increasing ever so slightly and throwing airlines’ planned re-activation date out the window, messing up their overall route network.

2024 was a mixed bag for AirAsia, with the carrier all but confirming that it wasn’t a year to necessarily remember with far more difficult conditions than what was expected.

As a result, the carrier confirmed that its plans for the year were not realised, and this was certainly not aided by the persistent delays in acquiring new aircraft from manufacturers such as Airbus.

These manufacturers have struggled to acquire spare parts and produce their aircraft on time, resulting in a complex environment for airlines relying on the delivery of new aircraft.
