Amid a major rebuild, Air India has announced a significant order with European aircraft manufacturer Airbus.
The latest commitment is for the airline to order up to 100 more aircraft to help propel its fleet in the future. It significantly brings the order book to 344 units with Airbus, showcasing the direction Tata Group wants to take the carrier in the future.
Air India has added 10 A350 widebody jets to its backlog after already taking delivery of several A350s, enhancing its high-capacity flying with a more efficient alternative.
Meanwhile, the airline has also returned for the ever-reliable and popular A320 family, with 90 units ordered here. The variants remain undisclosed, and Air India will be free to play with combinations as they see fit.
Ensuring aircraft are purchased now is vitally important for a company undergoing such a major transformative effort. Delivery slots will only continue getting scarcer, and airlines will feel they need to get in sooner rather than later to secure their slots moving into the 2030s and beyond.
While the leasing market exists, this is also an avenue that’ll begin showing pressure and reach a breaking point if airlines aren’t prepared and forecast their future fleet. Air India, however, can consider itself one of the lucky carriers that can order so far in advance thanks to its major backing.
It isn’t a lie; India’s rapid passenger growth is outpacing the rest of the world. As such, the infrastructure from airports to airline assets must improve dramatically.
Fundmanetal purchases such as these will give carriers such as Air India the best possible means to keep up with demand, ensure that they can be seen globally, and meet all available demand rather than continuing to fall behind.
The Chairman of Tata Sons and Air India stated that when they ordered hundreds of aircraft last year, equating to 470 firm units, there was already a case that more planes would be required.

Expanding and renewing the fleet is a top priority, and with all these aircraft coming with revised branding, among many other features, such as a fresh cabin interior, it represents a new look for the airline, attempting to right its wrongs as it enters a new era.
Air India says the 100 new planes will contribute to its mission of building once more a world-class airline that is not limited to where it can fly. This is a major positive for a rapidly increasing population that has reached many other countries.
